2005 PONTIAC MONTANA SV6 BRINGS PERFORMANCE, STYLE AND REFINEMENT TO CROSSOVER MARKET

CHICAGO - The rugged look of an SUV and the utility of a mid-van - Pontiac's all-new SV6 crossover sport van delivers on both counts with a package of sporty styling, responsive performance, superior quality and segment-leading in-vehicle entertainment choices. Pontiac introduces the 2005 Montana SV6 at the Chicago Auto Show on Feb. 4.

The Montana SV6 is Pontiac's second crossover vehicle and is the latest in an expanding portfolio of new products, including the 2004 Grand Prix, Bonneville GXP and GTO, the refreshed 2005 Vibe, 2005 G6 sedan and 2006 Solstice roadster. All of these vehicles exemplify the division's renewed spirit of performance. Pontiac's performance renaissance incorporates exhilarating driving dynamics, a bold and distinctive design language, and refined interior and exterior appointments.

"The Montana SV6 has the best attributes of SUVs - aggressive styling and a solid stance - and the convenience of a van, including a low step-in height, interior versatility and dual power-sliding rear doors," said Jim Bunnell, Pontiac-GMC general manager. "It also has the sporty character and attributes that have made Pontiac's other crossover vehicle - Vibe - resonate so strongly with customers."

Expressive design - one of the keys to Pontiac's product renaissance - is seen in the Pontiac-signature dual-port grille front-end styling. Similar attention to detail is found throughout the interior, including the performance appearance of the instruments and superior seating material, as well as chrome appointments on the door handles and instrument ring, and brushed chrome on the center stack and steering wheel.

"The Montana SV6 has a performance look and features uncompromising functionality," said Bunnell. "It satisfies the needs of mid-van customers. By giving them the best of SUVs and mid-vans, they don't have to compromise functionality for a great looking, contemporary vehicle."

The Montana SV6's "best of both worlds" features include:

- Expressive SUV styling cues.
- Body structure and chassis reinforced to improve crash protection.
- Low step-in height and dual power-sliding rear doors.
- Seven-passenger seating.
- Responsive high-value 3500 V-6, producing 200 horsepower and 220 lb.-ft. of torque.
- Available remote start.
- Four-wheel disc brakes with standard ABS.
- Standard 17-inch wheels and tires.
- Foldable and removable second- and third-row seat; 50/50-split stowable third-row with fold-flat seat.
- Available, leading edge audio/video system, with optional DVD player and flip-down screen.
- Segment-exclusive Mobile Digital Media Powered by PhatNoise entertainment system available, with 40-gig, removable and downloadable hard drive cartridge - enough memory to hold 10,000 songs in MP3 or WAV formats - plays music, movies, video games and much more.

"The SV6 will appeal to a lot of people who need the practicality, convenience and safety of a mid-van, but would rather be seen in an SUV," said Jim Vurpillat, marketing director for the Montana SV6. "They'll like being seen in the SV6 - they'll also love the amenities, performance and quality that are the essence of the vehicle."

Responsive powertrain and chassis systems

A new, high-value 3500 V-6 powers the SV6. Rated at 200 horsepower and 220 lb.-ft. of torque, the engine delivers the enthusiastic performance expected of a Pontiac. Excellent launch feel and highway-speed acceleration were parameters during the engine's development, as were reduced noise and vibration, class-leading fuel economy and reliability, and low emissions.

The 3500 engine is mated to the Hydra-Matic 4T65-E four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, which provides smooth, almost seamless shifts. Electronic safeguards built into the transmission ensure trouble-free performance. When properly equipped, an SV6 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Versatrak all-wheel drive is an optional feature. Unlike some other systems that only can split torque between the front and rear wheels, Versatrak can split torque between the left and right wheels. This enhances the system's effectiveness on a variety of slippery road conditions.

The Montana SV6's powertrain is nestled into a chassis with cross-rail reinforcements that not only enhance stiffness, but bolster crash protection. Attached to the chassis is a MacPherson-strut front suspension and a twist-beam rear axle with integrated stabilizer bar. Seventeen-inch wheels and tires are standard, enhancing the SUV-like appearance of the vehicle.

Large, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard, while GM's sophisticated StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancing system is optional. StabiliTrak uses data from several state-of-the-art sensors located throughout the vehicle to measure road-holding performance. When the system senses the vehicle is not following the driver's intended patch, the brakes can be employed or the engine power reduced to help ensure the vehicle stays on the intended track.

Highly refined interior

The SV6 interior features low-gloss, high-quality materials and a host of clever storage and seating options. The second- and third-row seats are foldable and removable. The third-row seat features a 50/50 split and the lower cushion folds flat. There is up to 136.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the vehicle.

Other storage details include a segment-first overhead rail system, which integrates rear HVAC, audio controls, lighting and the rear-seat entertainment/DVD system in a single unit. Snap-in storage and accessory modules provide more flexible storage options for the system. The Montana SV6 also offers a flexible rear convenience center/cargo system, which provides covered storage for a variety of personal items.

PhatNoise leads entertainment choices

The Montana SV6's range of available in-vehicle entertainment choices is unprecedented. From XM Satellite Radio to a DVD player with flip-down screen and integrated controls, long drives pass more enjoyably. And then there's PhatNoise.

A segment exclusive, the Mobile Digital Media Powered by PhatNoise system is a wallet-size 40-gigabyte hard drive mounted in the overhead rail system, providing a staggering amount of versatility. The system's capabilities include:

- Storing and playing back up to 10,000 songs in MP3, WMA or WAV formats.
- Storing and playing up to 40 movies in MPEG format (standard format for movies).
- Storing and playing a combination of songs and movies.
- The ability to provide the software for playing a video game.
- The ability to provide a voice-browsing interface - if the driver wants to listen to music, the system tells him or her over the radio speakers the song's name, allowing the driver to run through a list of stored music using steering wheel buttons.
- Listening to books, magazine or newspaper articles recorded on a PC.
- Allowing simultaneous listening to two entertainment sources.
- Downloading digital camera pictures through a USB port in the PhatNoise cartridge and playing them back on the DVD screen.

The PhatNoise system's hard drive is easily removable, so it can be connected to a home PC or laptop to download computer files for playback in the SV6, giving passengers an unprecedented level of entertainment customization.

Safety and quality built in

The SV6 is engineered to be among the safest vehicles in its segment. The frame is designed to achieve effective crush, helping preserve occupant space while absorbing energy. A longer front-end compartment provides more crush space, while the longer, more heavily reinforced engine compartment side frame rails increase energy absorption during frontal impacts. This design is conducive for crash compatibility. The extensive use of high-strength steel is behind many of its structural enhancements.

All seven seating positions have three-point safety belts, with more effective load-limiting retractors with pretensioners.

Front dual-stage air bags for both driver and front passenger are standard. They are designed to inflate with greater or less speed and pressure depending on the crash severity. Optional seat-mounted side impact air bags now also provide head and torso protection for the both the front passenger and the driver.

From the headlamps to disc brakes, seat foam to power sliding doors, the SV6 is engineered for quality. Attention to detail and craftsmanship further enhances that quality. Road noise and wind noise have been reduced considerably, providing a quieter cabin experience for passengers. GM's Totally Integrated Acoustic System ensures excellent water and sound barriers inside every door.

Electrical reliability also has been improved by significantly reducing the number of connectors, terminals and splices and increasing the number of sealed connectors.

Production of the SV6 will begin in the fourth quarter of 2004 at the GM Doraville Assembly Plant near Atlanta, Georgia - a plant recognized for building the best-quality mid-vans in America. For two years in a row, GM Doraville ranked as the No. 1 plant in its segment in terms of productivity, according to The Harbour Report North America 2003 and The Harbour Report North America 2002.

That's actually pretty nice. So there was a benefit from extending the nose, other than the obvious "expressive SUV styling".

What makes the Pontiac sportier than the Chevrolet and Saturn versions? I understand that Buick is meant to be upscale, and the Pontiac more sporty, but how does it attempt to differentiate itself? Also, these vans have another selling point; they come with AWD. DC dropped the option to make room for sto-n-go, and Toyota Sienna is now the only non-GM van with the option. <_< :lol:
