Re: Automotive News: Pontiac future products

I dont know why they keep giving more production to Pontiac.
G3? 2 compacts sedans?
1 entry level coupe and sedan to mimic the G6 and G8's design.
There should be NO entry level Buick. Buick should start with LaX and go up from there.
GM cant get thier act together with the PBG dealers. Treat them like 3 niche brands, and give them niche products. Lax, RWD Lucern, a Skylark coupe off Epsilon, and Enclave luxury SUV.
Pontiac should start with G5 coupe and sedan, Vibe should be renamed G5 as well and be a 5 dr version.
G6 could go RWD, but a FWD Altima/Mazda 6 fighter is what it should be.
G8 goes after cars from the Maxima to the Acura TL to the Dodge Charger.
Solstice gets some play in there. If they do go with that 1.4T, could mean light weight roadster.

It is sad. I'd never thought I'd say it, but go ahead and kill Pontiac now, before it's tarnished any further. Kappa can live on with the Sky, and G8 can go to Chevy as an Impala. Everything else. . . who cares?

The G6 has to be RWD to give the Alpha platform the volume needed to maximize profit and to differentiate the Pontiac mid-size offering from the Buick.

Besides GM will have the Malibu, Impala, LaCrosse and 9-5 in the mid-size/large FWD market, more than enough to cover all markets.

Pontiac’s future lineup to focus small, front-wheel drive models

Although Pontiac was earmarked for a return as General Motors’ performance division, it looks as though those plans have been put on hold indefinitely. Thanks to higher gas prices and looming emissions and fuel economy standards, Pontiac will likely be limited to smaller, front-wheel drive models.

Pontiac’s first step away from its performance image will likely be in the form of the G3 – a sister vehicle to the Chevrolet Aveo. Although the G3 program was rumored to be on hold, Automotive News reports the program is back on, with the G3 slated to hit the market in 2009.

To complement the G3, two new Pontiac sedans are said to be in the works. The first would be a sedan to slot in between the G3 and G5, although it remains unclear what architecture the new model would ride on. However, the sedan hasn’t officially been given to the Pontiac brand yet – Buick is also in the running. And, since Pontiac and Buick dealers are typically housed under one roof, only one brand will be receiving the new model. Whatever division ends up with the new model, it should be ready to hit the market by 2012.

A Pontiac sedan based on the 2010 Chevrolet Cruze is still in the cards, with a simultaneous launch date possible in 2010. As with the Cruze/Cobalt, it still remains unclear how and if the new sedan and G5 will coexist.

The only other question mark surrounding Pontiac’s future lineup in is the direction of the next-generation G6 sedan. Some within GM are intent on keeping the popular four-door as a front-driver, while others want to move the G6 to GM’s new rear-wheel drive Alpha architecture in order to differentiate the G6 from other mid-size GM offerings. If the G6 remains FWD, a new model should hit the market in 2011, while the move to RWD would set that launch back by one year.

I thought this was interesting as well:

In keeping with Pontiac’s new fuel-efficient theme, the Solstice sports car will most likely get GM’s new 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder. Despite its diminutive size, the new engine will up the Solstice’s horsepower ratings and should improve overall fuel economy from the base car’s 2.4L motor.
Sounds like a good move, and it will make the Europeans happy (if it shows up in the Saturn Sky as well), but I wonder if they can pump up the power above the 140hp slated for the Cruze?

A G5 sedan could work if GM made a high performance AWD version to compete with the Mitsubisi EVO/Subaru WRX, otherwise I'm not sure why the would offer it as a Pontiac - better off as a Buick.

I can see a G5 coupe in GXP trim as a Civic Si/Scion tC competior.

A FWD car I would like to see from Pontiac if GM insists on FWD is something along the lines of the MINI - a different look of course but a small car foused more on driving fun than MPG.

So GM's "performance division" gets neutered again? G3 based on Aveo? Cruze variant?

Would somebody please put Pontiac out of its misery once and for all? Ponchos deserve way better than this.
People need to get out of their head that Pontiac has to be a performance division. If going forward, GM is going to have most Pontiac dealers under the same roof as Buick and GMC....then it makes sense to differentiate the cars based on styling. If a car is going to be styled in a more 'luxurious, elegant' manner, it goes to Buick. However, if it is to be of a sportier style, then it goes to Pontiac. Under the BPG roof, it makes sense to 'keep' pontiac around and offer that styling differentiation between the brands.

I would tend to agree. As much as I love Pontiac, and think it could be GM's enthusiast division, it needs to go if it's going to be nothing but rebadged Chevy's.

I guess I'll repeat my GM dream once again....

Chevrolet: Bread and Butter Family Cars and Trucks + Corvette.

Pontiac: 3-4 car mid-volume brand. RWD performance cars. Bargain BMW anyone?

Buick: SOFT Luxury market. IE Lexus, Acura. Focus on Comfort and Technology.

Cadillac: Performance Luxury Nuff Said.

GMC: Copy-cat truck outlet for Pontiac-Buick Dealers. Hello! no extra development costs here!!

Saturn: Quality import fighter. (possible AXE)

Hummer: Niche off-road luxury (land rover anyone?) (possible Axe)

Saab: Either drop their prices or AXE them. Can you imagine how great the 9-3 convertible would be for 32K instead of 40+K???
