Try not to weep upon watching this drone video.
Earlier this month, GM's Bowling Green Kentucky factory and the Corvette Museum were hit by a tornado. The destructive force of nature left more than 120 units of C8 Corvettes severely damaged. Chevrolet had to scrap all units that show any signs of damages, leading us to this – a video of the thrashed Corvette units waiting for the crusher.

The drone video was uploaded by YouTube's svrweather. It's a sad sight, and the bevy of angles showcased in the short footage shows us the extent of damages caused by the tornado. There wasn't an exact count of the Corvette units affected, but Corvette Blogger reports that 115 to 122 units are to be destroyed after sustaining heavy damages.

Apart from the cars, the Corvette factory was hit by a fire caused by the tornado, which destroyed the building's roof as well as one of the employee entrances. Thankfully, all the workers managed to get out safely, though we couldn't say the same for the factory.

Yup, just an inanimate thing that can be rebuilt, but still a shame. I assume these all were orders for people that have been patiently waiting a long time. If it was a mainstream vehicle like an Equinox or Camry, I'd not care - but these are special!

Lots of international fire fighters travel to the US to assist with those almost annual devastating forest fires. There’s things that go unnoticed because some don’t want to make a big deal of helping others.

Not likely. I can't speak definitively about the tornado-damaged Corvettes, but this issue came up some decades ago following a similar situation. The situation was a car carrier crashed destroying its cargo of new Fords. A reporter asked about the insurance on the cars. The spokesperson explained that the insurance premium did not make business sense in view of Ford's replacement costs for the destroyed cars. The average car buff does not have a clue about manufacturing economics and their relationship to the drive away price paid by the retail customer. Most believe that the manufacturer's costs are dominated by metal and labor. This is not the case. It is not even close. This is truer today that it was when that truckload of Fords bought their tickets to the wrecking yard all those years ago.

There is, but insurance will not allow for resale of parts(liability). It's all or nothing if you want your check. They will be crushed as is. But... the outfit "crushing" them will certainly make "extra" profit off of some of those parts. I'll be watching ebay.

Any business that wants to "insure" a large number of items will generally find it more economic to assume the loss itself, that way no insurance company is taking a hit.

I don't know what current figures are but the marginal cost of production was only about 30% of the list price, the rest being swallowed by research, development, marketing and overheads.

We send aid to 3rd world countries that lack the resources and ability to un**** themselves. We have both the resources and the ability to help ourselves. There is a fundamental difference there. I shouldn't have to tell you this.

However there are a number of Cons in congress that will always vote no whenever other states that have natural disasters ask for aid, touting fiscal responsibility, they are first in line to demand aid when their state needs it though.....that's so weird...

You should speak for yourself. Just because you never hear of offers of help following disasters--natural and otherwise--in the US does not mean that those offers were not made. They were. However, the United States usually does what it did following Hurricane Katrina. We decline the offers.

But how much/many of those other country's offers are just lip service so they can "stay on our good side" vs. real genuine intent(and actually be able to cough it up and provide)? That is the million $ question.
