I'm not sure this is the place to ask it, but what are the years affected for OnStar cutoff? I know someone who has a 2001 and a 2003 GMC vehicles and they would like to know if they'll be able to upgrade and keep using OnStar. They don't have OnStar yet as they don't want to use it and enjoy it and then have it go out, or something like that. ;)

 So the vehicles have it, but they're not activated? And suddenly they want to activate it after all this time (presuming they bought new or slightly used)?

Most GM vehicles produced before 2002, in addition to some '02-'04 models equipped with OnStar, are affected.

2001 you're probably out of luck. I have an 03 Tahoe with the analog/digital ready system (Gen 5). Had the upgrade done about a year ago to Gen 6 digital, and the difference in service is very noticeable. The sound quality is much better, as is the reception, plus you can combo the calling minutes with a Verizon plan if you use the built-in unit for calls. If you're looking into upgrading your 03, make sure you ask the dealer about the upgrade program. When I did mine, the upgrade hardware, and the labor to switch it out, was free with a three-year Onstar service contract. I don't know if that is still going on, but it's worth asking. It was a pretty big hit, at around $550 for the three-year Safe & Sound package, if I remember correctly, but it was worth it, as according to my dealer, the upgrade hardware and labor alone were in the neighborhood of $1000. Onstar absorbs the cost in hopes of selling you years more service and saving some sort of face in this whole mess. Good luck!

We do the upgrades all the time, like said above if you agree to a plan they will do it for free (the hardware and install that is). The basic plan is $199 + $15 harware shipping charge, so for $214 you get upgrade and 1 yr safe and sound package.

Don't ya think that some Third Party company will make some kind of an Adapter for those with an Analog On-Star?

They make everything else....

If it was easy to do, GM would have come out with something, if not just to please their customers.
I understand it takes a lot of wiring changes.

It would take an act of congress to get GM to use an aftermarket adapter and then still offer service for the onstar system. I doubt they will do anything about it. After-all, this was a government mandated change that was apparently not known about at the time of the systems in question.
