DEARBORN — In the minds of the motoring public, the Mustang is just a thinly-veiled race car.

So, Ford Motor Co. is using this week’s New York International Auto Show to bare the soul of its Mustang icon with the GT-R, a concept vehicle that celebrates the car’s ties with speed and performance.

“It’s a full-blown racer,” said J Mays, Ford’s group vice president of design. “It has more power than any man has a right to aim down the road.”

Making its debut in the same city where the first Mustang was introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair, the concept car is based on the 2005 production model and hints at what might be seen on the track when race teams get their hands on the new pony car. Ford will begin building the production model in September at AutoAlliance Inc., the Flat Rock plant it shares with Mazda Motor Corp.

The GT-R is also an homage to the imaginations of Mustang owners who can’t resist the temptation to tinker.

apparently to some even a honda insight with a 500hp engine and a huge wing would be okay...
anyone that's ever defended the GTO has to let this slide. no, this 'stang isn't too pretty... but if it's truly what's underneath that counts... ddddamn! concept cars HAVE to catch your attention, even if it's with big wings and ugly paint jobs. half the guys here seem to wish the GTO was a little more visual... well this thing is visual!
What the heck.........

Someone grab some Uncle Ben's! We got a ricer here!
This car draws more on the Concept Mustang that I liked. Yea this car is a Real Race Car with real RW Power and will actually need a wing unlike that Cheesy Civic you see buzzing down broadway.

THe rear view of this car is also simmular to the Concept (but this site dosn't show the taillights.)

Every New car I look at that is as unique as this one usually takes a wile to grow on me.

Over all I like alot! But that may be because Im the only fool here that actually likes Ford. Oh well, Pitty me...

It wouldn't matter if ford made the perfect car, You guys still wouldn't like it because your all anti-Ford.

Don't for get to eat your icecream!
It might not be the best that they could come up with...............but it's a hell of a lot better than the ..........oh that's right ,the camaro is dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first of all, let me tell those of you calling this "rice" just how stupid you are. "rice-burner" is a term originally used for anything Japanese, and now is more or less used on hopped up asian cars. the Mustang, last i checked, is an American car. some of you are just complete morons. okay, i said it.

secondly, do none of you realize that concepts are meant to be outlandish, and eye-catching? most concepts are toned down considerably before they make it to production, and IF Ford made that, it would get the same treatment, i'm sure. however, keep in mind, that even if it remains goofy looking with that large spoiler (which, for the record, i'm not really a fan of either) it's an infinite number of steps ahead of GM, since their pony car duo couldn't stand the heat, and was forced out of the kitchen. the Camaro/Firebird is dead. the Mustang is still running strong. chalk up 2 victories for Ford there. show me GM's competitor for the Mustang, maybe then i won't be so impressed, but for right now, even with its retro look, the '05 Mustang looks like a home run.... it's gorgeous.

All in the eyes of the beholder. ;)
thanks for the extra pics!
what a waste: instead of spending money where it counts, they use for concepts that prove nothing.

and who thinks that it's normal for the concepts to be cool while the production cars suck, take a closer look at the chrysler concepts, and lately gm (solstice).
I liked somehow the mustang GT concept, but I started to puke all over the place when I saw the production version...
what makes ford a disgrace for the american market is the way they cut corners and how cheap and stupid make their cars.

the worst thing you can do is to say: "well, it's better than nothing"
let me tell you that I won't spend 1$ on a ford product, at least untill they get their $hit together.

You guys crack me up...

So if the Mustang reprosents a disgrace to America and is still alive and going strong, Whats that make a Camaro? Your own logic may answer that.

Its a race car, so the functional wing has to be accepted. Remember that the Corvette C5R uses one in racing. So that must be "rice" by the logic in this room.

Id wait till you see the actuall Production Cobra, Shelby, Mach 1, Boss, or other possible Higher performance Stang before I harped on the Styling of the Mustang GT vs the Concept. I personally would like to see the looks set the performance models apart from the GT.

Ah what the heck, Bias makes people Dumb! Just admit your jellious and move on or quit whining..
Heres a photochop of the car without the racing edge or "rice"

nice chop...car looks nice. this whole argument is retarded. whether or not you think the car is attractive, calling it a ricer is the stupidest thing you could say...and everyone who has commented on that has already said clearly enough why.
the c5r is like 10 times wider and lower than this garbage, how can you even compare them?

BTW, the holes in the bumper are air intakes (for brake cooling or engine): you have to be real dumb to put fog lights there, no offense...
This concept is at least less retro looking than the 05 Mustang.
If Ford was to build the GT-R it would be a limited production car and great to read about how fast and how good it handles in the media. The GT-R also would provide a halo for the Mustang.
The headlamp treatment is unusual.

Thanks again for the insults johnd89. unfortionatly, I am not responsible for the photo-chopping of this car.

Hey, How about this for advice, Just say you dont like it cause its a ford and move on. I have once to see you make a strong point using intellect, purpose and reason rather than having to resort to shallow comments and biased insults. But hey by all means, don't give up buddy.
haha.

also, i'm assuming the chop was made to look like a regular street version of the car rather than the race car it already was...thus the fog lights would make perfectly good sense.
