DEARBORN — In the minds of the motoring public, the Mustang is just a thinly-veiled race car.

So, Ford Motor Co. is using this week’s New York International Auto Show to bare the soul of its Mustang icon with the GT-R, a concept vehicle that celebrates the car’s ties with speed and performance.

“It’s a full-blown racer,” said J Mays, Ford’s group vice president of design. “It has more power than any man has a right to aim down the road.”

Making its debut in the same city where the first Mustang was introduced at the 1964 World’s Fair, the concept car is based on the 2005 production model and hints at what might be seen on the track when race teams get their hands on the new pony car. Ford will begin building the production model in September at AutoAlliance Inc., the Flat Rock plant it shares with Mazda Motor Corp.

The GT-R is also an homage to the imaginations of Mustang owners who can’t resist the temptation to tinker.

its not all bad, im not a fan of the retro theme anyway. i mean its good on the SSR, PT, and prowler, cars that are directly copying the past, but when it does, well i bugs me, i like when cars have hints at the past, but not a full retro design of past classic, ford seems to be doing this to the entire line, i mean mustang, ford GT, and thunderbird are all complete copies. just hope they stop there and let the whole retro copy thing die off.

like i said i like some retro styles, just not when its a direct copy of the past.

It wouldn't be so bad if the radiator couldn't be seen. Thankfully, it's only a concept so far.

every now and then a thing like that comes along to remind me why do I hate those fords so much-hehe-
keep them coming ford!

PS: I would buy one if it would cost not less than 150k$ and have a higher (top fuel like) wing.

i think you're all overreacting. it's basically what the old cobra R was except it's more spiced up for concept duty. the car is meant to look like a race car. also, i think those may be brake ducts on the side rather than exhaust pipes...but i'm not sure. aside from the wing, which is also similar to that of the cobra R, i think it looks pretty nice. better than the production model at least.

Did any of you read the article? It has a 500hp N/A 5.0 DOHC V8 under the hood. I'd be willing to put money that the wing is functional. The first thing I noticed about the car is the massiveness of the grille openings, exposing the two fans. Sure, there are some elements that are a bit over-the-top, like the size of the side exhaust and the wheels (20's??). But you know, I'd bet that it's probably well into Viper territory as far as performance goes. I'd love to see this get built, with some minor cosmetic changes of course, but I imagine it will be limited to the race track. The angle of the photos is not terribly flattering, though. I'll wait for some actual photos from the show before passing final judgement.
