Nissan to enter hybrid race, considering X-Trail small SUV for U.S.

Nissan hybrid-come-lately
Several years behind rivals Toyota and Honda, Nissan will enter the hybrid race in 2006 with a gas-electric 2007 Altima. The hybrid will use the base Altima's 175-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine mated to electric-drive components from Toyota. Nissan says the Altima Hybrid's electric motor will put out 100kw, or twice that of the current Prius.

Hitting the X-Trail

The next generation of Nissan's Japan, Asian- and European-market X-Trail compact SUV, a competitor with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV, is "under consideration" for U.S. importation. The current generation X-Trail goes on sale later this year in Canada (AW, March 15), but Nissan will hold the U.S. debut until next year's introduction of the 2006 model.
