Toyota may jump into heavy-duty truck market with 7.0L diesel

There remains the possibility that Toyota could add a heavy duty pickup to the Tundra lineup to compete with similar offerings from Ford, GM and Chrysler. Having noticed the popularity of diesel engines in those big trucks, Toyota is reportedly preparing a new 7.0L diesel V8 for the monster truck. If it comes to pass - perhaps as soon as 2011-12 - the big diesel would join a smaller unit in the light duty Tundra. That diesel announced at this years Detroit Auto Show is likely to be based on the 4.5L diesel that Toyota already offers in other markets in the Land Cruiser.

By the time they get this out everybody else will be providing the same with approx. a 4 - 5.5 litre - and less total emissions with superior fuel economy. Kinda' tells you something about how bad Two Mode whips HSD in the larger applications.

Two totally different situations. The 7.0 liter - which is strictly a rumor right now anyway - is for heavy duty applications. Is a 7.0 liter diesel HD truck really that much worse than a 6.6 liter Duramax or 6.4 liter PowerStroke? Especially if (and who knows if it does) gets the same fuel economy?

According to a different Autoblog article, Toyota is already working on a 4.5 liter light duty diesel for the Tundra and Sequoia for MY 2010.

And 2010 is, as you know, the same date that the other guys are launching their 4.5 liter light duty diesels.
