Meet BMW’s Silent, 700-Horsepower Tesla Killer—It’s Called “The Thing”.

December 10, 2014

A secretive tech group inside BMW has built an all-wheel-drive, 700-hp Tesla P85D killer, but it’s so far off the books that it’s not even considered to be an official prototype yet.

We’ve just been for a ride in the 5-series GT Power eDrive, which is what BMW’s marketing people call the combination of the company’s next-generation battery tech, two electric motors, and a front-mounted four-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline motor. It has been built to prove the optimistic musings from a handful of engineers, who are convinced there’s a fillable hole between now-conventional plug-in hybrids and battery-electric cars. And they call it The Thing.

The Thing is a scalable model for BMW’s future zero- and low-emission cars, with the powertrain’s output ultimately able to be turned down to as low as 250 horsepower and all the way up to 650 horsepower. The idea is that it would run as a pure EV for at least two-thirds of the time.

The 5 series was likely used because it offered the best packaging option for BMW, not the most aesthetic option. Too bad they did it and it sucks.

It's just another reminder that there' still plenty of opportunity for someone to bring back exceptional design. This thing is horrible. Stop trying to copy Audi; it's no A7.

To BMW's defense, the 5GT had a slightly different purpose than the A7. It has more back seat space and was supposed to be more practical. BMW can do the 4 door coupe thing just fine- look at the 6-series Gran Coupe.

The Gran Coupes are the worst. Audi's Sportbacks and the CLS execute the look wayyyy better. Gran Coupes aren't ugly, they just look too sedan-like still.

In my humble opinion I seriously think Elon Musk & Mary Barra need to get together and work out a partnership deal. GM does not have a full electric and Tesla only has full electric and not a plug in hybrid.
GM's T-Cell system would be a nice addition to the Tesla portfolio for those with range anxiety and GM can get a full plug-in with the surfboard concept they pioneered with a concept about a decade ago. I think they would really be a good and boost sales for both companies. Tesla could also have a dealership network in which they could move more metal in the States that will not allow them to sell w/out dealer in-between. There are so many reason to do this and very little to not make sense. I call it hear today that in the next 2-5 years Tesla and GM will be partners!
