Yep, I think you'll find that most sales people only know enough to be smarter than the average customer. People in car forums are not usually average customers. We know a lot more than the average car shopper, and therefore a lot more than the average sales person.

I remember in 2013/2014 when the new trucks came out I went to my local GMC dealership and was shopping for my first Denali. The salesman I got stuck with didn't know very much about the trucks and I was asking a bunch of questions that he couldn't answer. I think he must have been new at the time, but I knew I wanted to order something not on their lot so it wasn't a big deal. I've since used the guy to buy three trucks and I've been car shopping with him several times with my mom and I will give him credit for being much more knowledgeable than he used to be. He is now able to answer questions about laminated glass, key differences between trims, safety features, how to enable/disable certain features, etc., etc. I've been very impressed that he now knows a lot more than that first time I bought from him. But this is I think the largest GMC dealership in Texas, so I assume they put in a little more effort with their training than the average dealership.

Took my daughter to a GM dealer on Saturday to look at a Chevy Tahoe. The salesman knew absolutely nothing about the vehicle, and confessed that he had only been on the job for three months. He had not received any formal training, and when I asked for his card, he went to the service desk, got out a piece of paper, and wrote down his name and email address. Handing it to me, he stated that his business cards were still on order.
To repeat, 3 months into it and still couldn’t be bothered to familiarise with his product? No cards, no training? And quite evidently no management supervision either. Does anyone there give a stuff?

You’d have to worry if the quality of their Service Department is reflective of the Sales Department.

Sadly had a similar experience, I literally had to walk her through the build. At first she tried pulling up a 2022 Canyon.
Years ago, when at my Pontiac dealer, I had to step in to help out a floundering salesman as a potential customer was asking questions the salesman couldn't answer. I think I sold a car :D

All of these situations are indicative of the "cycle of doom" that's not uncommon with retail sales occupations (both sales associates and sales managers). The Rikess Group describes it in the graphic below.

Most salespeople are more attuned to financing. And trying to convince the customer that the convenience package (that contains two things you want and twenty things you don't) is a real good deal and only increases your monthly cost by a "little" bit.

Congratulations on your truck - great choice!

Thank God I thought, that GM vehicles are selling themselves these days.

.

But if you buy from that salesperson, they will still be paid a commission by you!

I neighbor has a order in for a 2023 GMC Canyon Denali. He had a 2022 on order but it was cancelled by GM and the dealer used an allocation to place an order for a 2023 last fall when the order banks were open. I seen him yesterday, no production date yet, still at 2000 as of last week. Its going to be the first one the dealer gets.

That Denali looks great in white.
