Contrary to popular belief, Lexus and the 1991 LS400 was not the first automobile manufacturer to use electroluminescent backlighting for their dashboard displays, Chrysler was.

This may suprise the reader of this thread as it did me. Following is a picture of a Chrysler made in 1966, the Chrysler Charger. To me, the display can easily pass for a 2000+ dashboard. Notice the even lighting, even around the small text. Unheard of and unseen until 1991, with the aforementioned Lexus:

that looks awesome. could you provide a link?
You could right-click on my pic., or google "1966 charger electroluminescent," that will bring up a bunch of links on the subject, including refurbished, original EL modules for the car's interior. Hope that helps. :)

I wonder why all dashboards arent lit this way? No light bulbs to burn out and it is a nice color. I would imagine it could be made in any color if the company wanted. I think even my 2005 Equinox has regular bulbs.

wow, that is a really nice gauge setup. I wish gauges would return to more original designs like these. The color, well, I'll just say that it isn't my favorite.

I agree, that is a pretty attractive cluster and would look good in a modern vehicle
