I have an 06 Z71 I'm replacing the rear axel seals on my truck but I wanted to add that the steering coloum knocking was a recall in the GMC Sierra for 05 and whatever years the same column was used, as you may know they are damn near the same truck. I installed a body lift on my truck which included a steering extension to compensate for the 3 inches which just made the knocking worse. The fix I've heard is a new non-greasble shaft that GM has agreed to replace of trucks up to 100,000 miles, I havn't looked into it but I would suggest anyone who has the problem should get it to the dealer to check it out. It's a quick and easy install but the part and labour should be free.
