Jarryd Hayne NRL to NFL

Just wondering what the consensus is on this?

I wish him good luck but am not convinced it will be a successful foray. Depends on his definition of success I guess.

But, good promotion in having NRL clips on the NFL website and mentioned on sports channels in the US.

I was jut looking for this thread to comment after reading some of the stories and couldn't find it

So he's to be a running back?

This is interesting Red but I doubt any interest in NRL will come of it

Most yanks would be saying how he's moved on to play NFL from the backwater minnow sport in Australia

Of course they would be incorrect

He flew out today.

I'm a little concerned that RL is now on the map as a producer of athletes. Union, Afl, and now NFL are on the board as being possible, wealthier, destinations.
A bit like when GM 'discovered' Holden?

That's true - it's hard for the NRL because there are so many options for the players

Draft doesn't work for this reason

Increased Salary cap or unlimited means smaller clubs go under

Too many Sydney clubs

I think the time is coming for each club to have 1 'marquee' player outside the cap, like in the ALeague. Or, some similar scheme.

That and clubs that develop their own should be allowed concessions on the cap

Or if they develop a player , I'm going to use a player like Milford as an example, and another club offers that player a contract to leave the club that built him then the buying club pays a transfer fee to the developing club

Also I think player managers have too much influence

Player managers are somewhat of a curse on sport, whether AFL, NRL or cricket, but the clubs brought it on themselves by not offering enough. Now they do and a percentage goes to someone doing bugger-all (as far as the sport goes that is).

I made the exact same comparison the other day! Sure it was with my inner monologue, but technically that's still a conversation.

I liked the idea of a loyalty discount, so the longer a player stays with a club, the higher the salary cap to accommodate a bonus specifically and only for that player. Bonus gets bigger the longer they stay.

I really think Hayne will do well. Tying for the Dally M with the best player in the world must stand for something. Also I think running back is a pretty perfect sport for him, or possibly a strong safety considering his strength and awareness.

Brett Morris was a junior and a long term player... And Saints lost him today. So, yep there needs to be so sort of reward for developing juniors or keeping players long term, or both.

Hayne could be a punter, a punt chaser, a kick returner or at a stretch - a running back. I just think it will take him longer to learn the lines to run and the calls for the 'moves' that come with the running back role. Athletically, yep I think he's got it - though I wonder how he'll go with the 150kg dudes with helmets and fibreglass padding tackling him. Ouch.
