It appears the Commodore outsold the Mazda 3 in June by 300 (3500-3200 sales) giving it a narrow sales lead YTD. Mazda 3s sold more Jan-April than any other car, even though it was beaten by the Corolla in Jan and the Commodore in Feb-April. Commodore production was affected by the traditional Christmas shutdown combined with distribution issues due to flooding covering the North-East of Australia between December and February.

Mazda 3 had a bumper month (sorry about the pun) in June, when production recovered and backorders from the Tsunami were filled. It now appears sales have settled back into a normal pattern.

GM Holden Media Release - 3 August 2011

HOLDEN COMMODORE BACK ON TOP
• Commodore Australia’s number one car
• Cruze above 3000 units for the second month in a row

Holden recorded another solid sales performance in July with Australia’s favourite family car, the Commodore, returning to number one position in the annual sales race.

According to figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), Commodore reclaimed year-to-date market leadership and was also the best performing vehicle for the month with 3551 sold and a 53.2 per cent share of the large car segment.

Commodore’s baby brother, the Adelaide-built Cruze added to its incredible 2011 sales performance, with Australians snapping up more than 3000 units for the second consecutive month. The popular small car range, which features the most fuel-efficient car built in Australia, was the number two small car in July with 3123 units sold and a 16.9 per cent share of the small car segment. It was Cruze’s best July sales performance since its 2009 launch.

Other strong performing Holden carlines included the family-friendly Series II Captiva range which continued its steady performance with 1083 sales of Captiva 7 (765 units) and Captiva 5 (318 units) for the month.
Overall, Holden’ recorded a solid July market share of 13.4 per cent, selling a total of 10,819 units.

Holden Director of Sales Philip Brook said July was a sound month for Holden across a number of carlines, which was reflected in Holden’s steady market share. “Our strong July results come off the back of some great locally-built product. Commodore sedan and Sportwagon models continue to draw plenty of attention in our showrooms while the customer reaction to the Series II Cruze has been quite phenomenal,” Mr Brook said. “We plan to build on this momentum in the second half of the year as we continue to roll out new models across the Holden range.

“Our next-generation Barina and locally-designed Cruze hatch are just around the corner and we expect the launch of these models to cap off a strong year.” Year-to-date, Holden has sold 73,389 vehicles and has a market share of 12.7 per cent.

Interesting quote from goauto: "The two leading importers are now both locked on 50,000 units apiece so far this year – Mazda just in front with 50,780 to Hyundai’s 50,204 – setting up an interesting race for the 2011 importer crown." Toyota is by far the biggest importer.

Toyota is considered a local manufacrturer because of Camaurion production.

The Mazda 3 is a good fit for our market - now comprehensively a better car than Corolla despite being heaviest slowest and thirstiest in base trim (parallel with Cruze in US?). It's now grown in girth and room.

Comes as a 3-door, 5-door, sedan; and with 2.0 and 2.5 petrol, 2.3 turbo and 2.2 diesel if you can't find one you like you're pretty choosy. Arguably the least-cheesy styled of the Asian smallcars and reliabilty and resale right up there. Surprising it doesn't do better Stateside, really.

This also means Cruze has to be just behind 3 in third place. Again, off the back of sedan-only sales, that's impressive.

There's no 3 door Mazda 3 but definately a greater range than the Cruze.

I think the Territory got in on the registrations of dealer stock. I can't see it maintaining those sales.

Toyota's home grown sales were just over 2000 units. Not great.

SA Government Health has bought a great number of Cruze Diesels for use by the District Nurses - all white so these will be coming up for auction in approx 2 years!!!!

I think part of the reason that the Falcon cracked the top 10 was they were selling the XR6 for around $32,000 on road after the cash back.

Mind you, I was 12 hours away from getting an SV6 sedan until my wife told me she'd now be needing a bigger car for a third child seat. No - she isn't interested in a Sportswagon but would like a 7 seat SUV.

#22 ·
Congrats Acerimmer, I'm assuming a bub is on the way.

You may find it tough to get 3 carseats across the back seat of most SUVs. The Sportwagon may be a good choice after all..... Of course the Territory would be good in this area as well.

I just don't understand the delay in getting a proper V8 engine into the Falcon. Would it have really been that hard to validate it for the 5.0?

#28 ·
I've said it before but the reason is (according to what i've read) they are having issues getting the 5.0 to make enough low down torque to be competitvive against the SS without a supercharger

Falcon is heavier than Mustang and if the 5.0 doesnt go as fast or faster than an SS what exactly is the point ?

Ford can point them to an XR6

Trouble is not everyone wants a turbo 6 and a lot of them cant afford a GT

...
Ah, the killer of any V8 that hasn't got good low rev torque.

My sister is digging her Captiva 5 diesel. Lifetime fuel economy is 6.8 l/100 - bear in mind her daily commute is peakhour across Melbourne from East to Docklands, about as bad as it can be. It's been back for it's 3,000km service, and total faults, problems = zero.

She said it's great on the freeway - and confirms she thinks it's actually a sporty drive which was my impression both on the release and of the tester I had for a week. Lots of fun to punt, for something so high, heavy and with semi-offroad tyres. The front parking sensors make it easy to park, too.

If you can cope with the somewhat plain DIC and mono screen - her Bluetooth works perfectly with the dealer-fitted kit. She impressed someone with a 2wd CR-V that bogged on wet grassy slope, when hers just walked straight up past it!

I thought the V8 supercars had rules that manufacturers in the series had to sell a RWD V8 in order to participate, or is FPV filling in the void for Ford?

I'm happier with my I6 Turbo than my previous tuned V8, but I guess some people just want more cylinders....

Some mad bike racer mates had a Dodge (Valiant by Chrysler) 245 Ute. It had a large 'Dodge' embossed on the tailgate. Some wag had written in texta underneath 'not just a name but damn good advice'.

I have heard that french transmissions blow up indiscriminately.

Red, the Captiva 7 has the centre belt placement a few inches toward the centre of the seat. The 5 has it further outboard. The difference was stark when I had the capsule (big ugly hire one) and the other kids booster seats. Getting the seatbelt done up was a chore.

Thats the old A4L (4sp) often typo'd as the A$L :D

Not much wrong with Citroen's 6sp auto, its a very common & well regarded Aisin box, which also supply for Toyota Landcruiser & Dodge Ram 5500 among others...
As of 2005, Aisin AW surpassed General Motors Powertrain Division as the largest producer of automatic transmissions in the world.

Aisin AW supplies automatic transmissions to 35 automotive manufacturers around the world, virtually every major OEM. These include General Motors, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Audi, VW, Volvo, Hyundai among others.

I think 5 sp Auto. My Captiva V6s have both had Aisin Auto boxes - not a single issue (yet, "fingers crossed").

I've got a SV6 auto hire car this week and after driving the manual version a couple of weeks ago, I'd probably take the auto one even though I love and prefer manuals.

Maybe I just needed a bit more time with the manual to get used to it.

It doesn't matter - I'm still looking at a 7 seater...:(

Bugger.

The CX9 may suit, though they seem BIG and I think they are a bit exxy. The Territory is still on your list I guess?
have you tried the Liberty Exige yet?

Are you focussed on AWD types, or are you thinking people mover as well?
