Will the 700000 unit cut and four plant closings announced by GM today mean that Toyota will be the undisputed #1 auto manufacturer in sales or do you think increased production of small cars and new models coming in the next 2 years will allow GM to stay in the game.
Just want some opinions.

I think this move is very positive, though it is a shame that changes at GM need to be so "revolutionary"...

BUT

This will be for not if GM fails to bring to market a high quality, efficient, DESIRABLE small car.

GM needs to bring BETTER cars to market - if they expect people to switch back to domestics. Being "just as good" isn't going to do enough. Imagine this commercial:

"The new Chevy Whatever! JUST AS GOOD as a Toyota Camry!"

or

"JUST LIKE a Toyota Camry!" ;)

Screw it, I've decided that rank doesn't matter anymore. Sure, toyota can have the #1 spot for all I care. We'll see how long they last when every little problem is criticized.

It's funny that GM is relying on Opel and Ford is relying on Mazda to survive, yet Toyota is relying on themselves and are doing better.
GM is relying on the following nameplates to survive:
GMC
Chevrolet
Cadillac
Pontiac
Saturn
Opel
Holden
Buick
Corvette
Hummer
Toyota is relying on the following to survive:
Lexus and maybe scion.
Honda is relying on the following nameplates to survive:
Honda. Acura. And that's about it.

Do we now see the ridiculousness of name-calling? If you can't, don't have kids. Thanx.

I'm predicting the #1 title will go back and fourth between GM and Toyota quarter over quarter, with GM breaking out from resistance about two years from now and reclaiming the #1 spot indefinately.
