Chevrolet Unveils Impala Indy SS

Supercharged Special Edition Salutes Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS - Chevrolet is introducing a 2004 Impala Indy SS to commemorate its long relationship with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500-mile race.

The limited edition model will have a production run of 4088 units and is currently being offered through select Chevrolet dealerships in the U.S. and Canada.

The Indy SS package is based on the new-for-2004 Impala SS sedan. At its heart is GM's 3800 Series II supercharged V-6, delivering 240 horsepower at 5200 rpm and an impressive 280 lb.ft. of torque at 3600 rpm. The torque curve is consistently high over a broad operating range, providing instant off-the-line acceleration and ample power for highway merging and passing.

Unique to the Impala Indy SS are 17-inch chrome diamond-cut aluminum wheels, monotone cross-lace grille with "gold" Chevy bowtie emblem and a rear spoiler. There's no doubt as to the connection with the 2.5-mile speedway, as Indy's famous "winged wheel" logo is found on the front fenders and instrument panel, as well as embroidered into the front seat head restraints and floor mats. Like the standard Impala SS, the Indy SS is available only in a monochromatic black exterior, complimented with grey leather seating surfaces inside.

Chevrolet's entire 2004 Impala lineup offers a solid body structure, room for five passengers, plenty of cargo space, a surprising number of amenities for the price, and a track record of outstanding quality, reliability and durability. Highlighting its comprehensive safety package, Impala consistently earns five stars (the highest U.S. government safety rating) in frontal crash testing for driver and front passenger.

It sounds fairly nice, but does anyone else agree that it's a bit difficult to get excited over a car that essentially a 1997 GTP (with respect to the engine). If they wanted to make it a bit more special they could have at least dropped the Series III powerplant in her.

Really, why not use a car with an engine based on one that actually ran at indy, like the 3800? It's almost as the GTO, and can be made faster very easily. ;)

Ugh... another tape and stickers job. It's as if Chevy is falling into the ricer mentality of more stickers = more hp. Well, truth be told, tape and stickers is an ancient phenomenon which just happened to be rediscovered by ricers. And to think; we could have avoided all this by having the older generation teach the younger generation about the futility of tape and stickers! Oh well.

The Impala is a nice sedan, and the L67 is a nice engine, but that's all they are; "nice."

From what I read in Sports Illustrated, the Impala SS is not the pace car, the Corvette is going to be the pace car.
that is true, but this is from GM. I guess its too late to make a 2004 Indy 500 corvette with the C6 on the way?

I got the chance to see the Indy 500 Impala SS at a local auto show this weekend, besides the small decals and the gold "bowtie", it was hard to tell the difference from the regular SS.

Maybe the pace car will be a C6? If not, I am sure that they will add some sort of decal package to a yellow or red Corvette convertible and use that, of course they would sell a version through dealerships. Chevrolet not selling a pace car Corvette would be like the sun not shining.

I would have prefered to see the Cadillac XLR as a pace car..but oh well.

I've seen a few of the Indy Impalas at some local dealers. Not much other than a few logos and increase in price. To my knowledge, this is not an Indy Pace Car, rather just an Indy commemorative edition.

Hmmm... 4 door chevy Impalla SS with V6. And some complain about the new GTO with 350HP, V8 with IRWD <_<
That what I'm saying...no one dare say "what about yesteryears Impala's?" when it comes 2 the current Impala and MC.

Just for clarification - The 2004 Corvette will be the Indy 500 pace car. An Indy Impala SS will also be made, but not for the pace car. See the link below.

Wow, what a concept! Stuff Buick's reliable 3800 Series II Supercharged V6 and market it as a new, exciting model! Come on Chevy, get real. :YMCA:
If you want market share, go the extra mile and get with the RWD "trend".
Bringing over the Holden Statesman would have been a better move. :woot2:

still think the idea of an "indy ss impala"  is a stupid marketing gimic.  over $1000 for emblems and embroidery that says "indy"?  only real difference is the grille, which i like, so i'll probably buy it soon.
It is a shame that that is all GM can do is promotional gimmics (limited editions ha). Just like the Monte Carlos and their Pace Car replicas/Signature Series cars. Look at the prices now for the 2002 Dale Earnhardt Signature Edition, some people actually bought them for resale value thinking they would go up...haha. The only thing that would have made that a collector car is if GM had the planning to slip the L67 SC 3800 Series II in it. Now they have a chance to slip a SC Series III into some of these limited edition gimmicks but no can do.

On a side note I have to hand it to them on the ext cab texas truck edition with the 2WD 345 HP LQ9 engine, same one as the Silverado SS. But then they only offer it in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana with a limited run of 3000 units. Hmmm. It is just business as usual.

I don't want to get too off topic, but what's up with the 345 hp Silverado? I live in Louisiana and I haven't heard anything of it.

I may be looking for something new. My 1998 Camaro was stolen Monday night and I think it's gone forever :-(

well, the impala indy ss, is supercharged.. but series II 3800. 05 imp ss should get series III, i beleive, making the indy ss even more of a waste of money.

Damn, sorry to hear about your stolen car...that sucks big time... :( ...those trucks should be hitting the dealerships soon, I been seeing them leaving the Truck Plant here in Oshawa for the past week...off to the rail cars.
another thread about them
