Recently, my local Chevrolet dealer sighed at the site of a GTO on the lot, wishing Chevrolet had something similar to compete with the Mustang. He posed the question, "If Chevy shared the GTO platform, I wonder if they would issue a new name, or use a name from the past like Camaro, Chevelle or Monza?"

That really got me thinking... If Chevrolet were to adopt the GTO/Holden platform, what would they name it?

I would love to see an article on this from an accredited authority.

The obvious name would be Chevelle since they were platform mates originally. As the dealer said Chevy needs a Mustang competitor but the current GTO platform id to expensive. The new Mustang will start at $25,000 for a 300hp GT on a totally new platform so unlees GM can do it for close to that they just don't get it.

Or Camaro.

But I think that given the current rage for muscle cars, Chevelle would generate a whole lot more respect than the Camaro name. And frankly, in its heart of hearts, the GTO/Commadore is much more a mid-size coupe than a pony car.

So I join the Big Swede in endorsing Chevelle.

And think about it: if they're selling two models, maybe they could afford to redo the Commadore/Catera/Opel-what's-its-name body with something a little more up to date. They styling was a nice theme, but it's getting really old.

I think the Chevelle, but they need to make it look much different than the GTO, also needs to have a different interior, granted I think the GTO has the best looking interior of every GM vehicle I've ever seen. Also if they do bring back the Chevelle they need to bring back the El-Camino (Holden Ute).

i don't think chevy will or should. When the first mustang came out so did the GTO, the GTO was not in the same category back then or now. Chevy fans had to wait 3 years until the '67 camaro/firebird came out. Now in 2004 the 40th anniversary of both the GTO and Mustang, and all new mustang has come out, so maybe in three years we will have a Camaro!

adding to what i said before, before GM unveiled the '67 camaro automotive magazines were wild with speculation and crazy, way off concepts kinda like whats going on now. Maybe Chevy will use this story to promote the new camaro, that the camaro was a little late but it was better. A quote from a book i got about the camaro is from a magazine called car life, they were commenting about the prospective name of the car and they said,"it probably should be called the reluctant dragon. It has been reluctant to arrive, its creators seem reluctant to build it, and the parent division is reluctant to admit its own two-year delay in recongnizing ths spectacular segment of the automotive market." The camaro was unveiled on September 12, 1966. It would be cool if they unveiled the 40th anniversary edition on the same day. We can only hope.

chevy also doesn't need the gto, the mc is there midsize coupe and hopefully it will go rwd,V8.

.... Chevy, as well as most of GM will use the new Holden chassis known as Zeta that has been talked about umpteen times over and over here on this site and others. GM has already shown a Zeta car at the New York International Auto Show called the Velite.

So yes, the Holden chassis, Zeta or known by Holden-ites, VE, will be the basis for the next Camaro, GTO, and a group of other cars for just abotu all of GM here in North America, to Europe and Oz.

Holden already export some of the commodore and statesman range to the middle east under the Chevy badge. The Commodore is the Chevy Lumina, the monaro (GTO) is the lumina coupe.

After the GTO's disappointing sales, I do not think that anybody in GM's executive row has the balls to stand up and propose a holden-Chevy. Especially if they will do another re-badge. The auto mags would really pound on GM for that.
If they do bring another import, it is better that they give it a new name.

I agree that another rebadged Monaro is very unlikely, but I think the reason for this topic is more 'what if'? I often wonder how the reception would have been for the rebadged Monaro had Pontaic not used the "sacred" GTO nameplate. If Chevrolet were to offer a rebadged Monaro, I'd stay away from any heritage nameplates. The main complaint for the 2004 GTO is simply the name. The new GTO is a great car, but too many people can't get past the three letters on the grill.
