The Genesis is pitted against Buick Lucerne, Chrysler 300, and Lexus ES.

Hyundai Motor America has announced prices for its new flagship, the all-new Genesis sports sedan, starting at $33,000 for a well-equipped 290-horsepower V6 and $38,000 for the 375-horsepower V8 model.

While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Lexus ES, Chrysler 300 and Cadillac CTS, Genesis’ performance capabilities and luxury features are comparable to sedans costing tens of thousands of dollars more. With base prices of $33,000 for a well-equipped 3.8-liter V6, and $38,000 for a 4.6-liter V8, Genesis makes a premium driving experience accessible to a wide range of customers. Genesis goes on sale at Hyundai dealerships in July, delivering the kind of value equation American car buyers have come to expect from Hyundai...

People are running out of reasons to buy a Lucerne.

Just copied this off of the GMCanada website:

Power is a prerequisite for a luxurious approach to driving. That's why the Lucerne CXS features the 275 horsepower 4.6L Northstar V8.
Riiiiight.

Engine, 3.8L V6 SFI, 197 hp @ 5200 rpm, 227 lb.-ft. torque @ 3800 rpm
Engine, Northstar 4.6L DOHC V8, 275 hp @ 6000 rpm, 295 lb.-ft. torque @ 4400 rpm
Engine, Northstar 4.6L DOHC V8, 292 hp @ 6300 rpm, 288 lb.-ft. torque @ 4500 rpm
The Lucerne is hammered by the V6 Genesis and spanked and sent to bed without supper by the V8 version.

That is a very appealing price range for what you get. It will be interesting to see what the maintenance costs will be. (That's where the Korean manufacturers get you.)

A good looking car with good performance and luxury features for a great price. I am sure they will do well with this vehicle.

Who wants an 11 year old frame?

The Wbody 3800/4 speed combo has been around forever, hell my GTP and its 4t65HD is still available today minus the blower, and my car is 10 years old!

Gul dern it! That is quite a value. Honestly though, I have no idea what to expect sales-wise.

That statement operates under the assumption that there were actually reasons to buy a Lucerne in the first place.
:D That was harsh. True, but harsh. :)

The Genesis V6: more cabin space than a 300, Avalon, Charger, Impala, or Maxima, 290 horsepower, RWD, six speed automatic, only 3800 pounds, decent size trunk (17 cubic feet if I remember right), all the safety features, very quiet inside, mileage 18/27 (would have been 21/30 under the 2007 and earlier EPA standards, which is pretty good for something this big and powerful) on regular fuel. $33,000 is still going to be a tough sell for Hyundai, but you have to give them credit - the initial reviews for this car are far more positive than most of us expected for Hyundai's first attempt at a RWD entry level luxury sedan. I doubt anyone will give up their Mercedes, but I wouldn't be surprised if they get a few people who would otherwise get a Lucerne, Avalon, or G35.

G-Body, the Lucerne and DTS are built on the G-body which dates back to around the early 1990's(the Bonneville was on it as well) So its more current than the W-Body, but the end should be near for both.

Its an impressive package from Hyundai.

I am very impressed with the Genesis, however I have to wonder if they would have been better served to create a "Luxury" division to sell their future higher-end cars in. Similar to what Toyota and Nissan did with Lexus and Infiniti. Unfortunately Hyundai still has a perception problem with many people for crappy econo cars even though they have made strides over the years and actually turn out a decent product.

This abomination is going to flop just like the Azera, purely because of the italicized "H" on its trunk. Cut-rate luxury is not luxury at all.
Toyota was smart enough to know that no matter how good a car might be that Americans would not spend luxury-car money on ANYTHING that said "Toyota" on it and invented a brand "experience" called Lexus. The rest is history.

There is a local Hyundai dealer here that regularly runs loud, low class ads on TV about two and three thousand dollar discounts on $12K cars. I wonder if anyone spending $33K would go to a place like that?

Different cars, different missions in life.....

Genesis is built on Hyundai’s all-new, performance-driven rear-wheel-drive architecture, with an advanced five-link suspension at all four corners. It offers two powertrains, the 290-horsepower Lambda 3.8-liter V6 engine mated to an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, and Hyundai’s all-new Tau 4.6-liter V8 engine mated to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission. Both deliver outstanding fuel economy. The Tau produces 375 horsepower using premium fuel and 368 horsepower using regular unleaded, leading all competitors in specific output (horsepower per liter), while also outperforming all V8 performance sedans with a projected fuel economy estimate of 17 city/25 highway. Genesis 3.8 achieves EPA fuel economy estimates of 18 city/27 highway, which outperforms the V6 engines in many smaller, mid-size cars (e.g., Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion) on the highway. With technology rivaling more expensive luxury sedans, Genesis showcases features such as XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS), Lexicon® audio systems and electronic active head restraints.

Genesis 3.8 – Standard Equipment

All Genesis 3.8 models come very well-equipped, including a 3.8-liter DOHC V6 engine, Aisin six-speed automatic transmission with ShiftronicTM, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with traction control, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and 17-inch alloy wheels with P225/55R17 tires. Additional standard equipment includes advanced front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, roof-mounted side curtain airbags, electronic front head restraints, fog lamps, automatic headlights, dual power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, leather seating surfaces with heated front seats, power seats, cruise control, Hyundai’s signature white and blue interior lighting with electroluminescent cluster, proximity entry with electric push button start, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with audio controls, dual front fully automatic HVAC, electrochromic auto-dimming interior rearview mirror with Homelink and compass, AM/FM/CD/MP3/XM (3-month subscription) with iPod/USB and auxiliary input jacks, Bluetooth and floor mats.

Genesis 4.6 – Standard Equipment

The Genesis 4.6 builds on the standard equipment found on the Genesis 3.8, adding a 4.6-liter DOHC V8, ZF six-speed automatic transmission, unique 18-inch hyper-silver alloy wheels with P235/50R18-inch tires, chrome lower bodyside moldings, ultra-premium leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped dash and door trim inserts, power glass sunroof with tilt and slide, power tilt and telescopic steering column, integrated memory system, Lexicon 15-speaker surround sound audio system, six-disc CD changer, illuminated scuff plates, wood-trimmed leather steering wheel, electrochromic auto-dimming interior rearview mirror with Homelink and compass, power rear sunshade and rain-sensing wipers with auto defogger windshield.
