Hyundai Genesis Coupe tested... in Korea

Hyundai is currently holding the first round of press drives featuring the Korean-spec Genesis Coupe and CAR's Middle-Eastern arm has released the first ever review of the automaker's entrant into the realm of rear-wheel-drive performance.

CAR's test was apparently limited to the 310-hp, 3.8-liter V6 model equipped with the six-speed automatic gearbox, allowing the 3,500-pound coupe to sprint to 62 in 5.9-seconds. With more torsional rigidity than the E46 BMW M3, the imported British pub reports that tail-out antics are easily achieved and the exhaust note is "thoroughly enjoyable." The list of gripes is brief, including steering that's a bit too light for the tester's taste, some less-than-savory plastics, the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel and compromised trunk space on account of the hatch's odd shape. But overall, CAR seems suitably pleased with the Genesis Coupe, impressed with the bang-for-the-buck quotient and the fact that the new two-door delivers something the Koreans have lacked up until now: soul and emotion.

Looks like Hyundai has something good going......will be interesting to see how it holds up in the real world for a bit after it's release.

Oh and couldn't they have ditched the pseudo-altezza taillamps too?

I actually like it
I was actually feeling in the minority on this. I DON'T like it.

To me, it doesn't compare to the new Challenger or the new Camaro (in the looks department.. Heck, I would probably take the current Mustang or GTO over this.

I agree with some of you here. It looks like it was put together using spare parts.

I really like the looks of this car and so hope that Welburn is devising an equally agile sleek "look" for Pontiac's line up. Pontiac now offers a mish mash of visuals cues linked ONLY by the twin nostril grille.

I think it looks decent, but the Camaro is much better.

So the question becomes price. If I remember right, the Camaro V6 starts at $22,000 and the Camaro V8 is $31,000.

If Hyundai prices the Genesis coupe base model (turbo 4) and V6 at $22,000 and $31,000, respectively, I think they will lose badly to the Camaro.

But if they manage to make the Genesis coupe really cheap, I think they could sell some.

That's what I really meant.

Anyone looking at Altima Coupe, Accord Coupe, G37, etc will cross shop this car.
Ah yes voila. It's not going to challenge diehards, but if they price it right I can see it on many people's shopping list. They really should put the V8 in it at some point... I can't imagine they'll do enough volume with the Genesis sedan alone to warrant an all-new V8 engine. Not that a V8 Genesis coupe would be a huge seller, but you'd think they'd want to spread the engine across as many vehicles as possible.

They should sell the V8 to Cadillac as a replacement for the Northstar! ;)
