Please don't take this the wrong way; this is a simple demographic question. I assume if you think the CeRVix looks "utterly fantastic" you are either female or ***? Am I correct?

The Torrent and Equinox still look great, very rugged looking like the Escape and Liberty. But their power-trains suck. The worst part of the Equinox is actually the fuel sucking Aisin Automatic. The same engine in a last generation Impala (similar mass vehicle) with GM's 4 sp auto gets way, way better MPG than the Equinox.
Hey, man, no offense taken. I am ***, and I was hesitant to mention that becasue I know if I did, it's going to drive the people who "utterly hate" the CR-V into believing that no hetersoexual male could possibly like it, which is just not try.

Yeah, the styling isn't as "butch" as the Escape, but I like it that way. If I wanted to drive a truck, I'd buy an F-150 or a Silverado. I didn't really care for the old CR-V's all that much, but I definately like the new one. The interior is very nice, and the exterior (while controversial) is unique. I like unique.

I love the Torrent in the looks department, I just iwsh they would've separated it from the Equinox a little bit more. But right now, if I had to buy a mini SUV, it would be the CR-V for many, many reasons.

If you don't care what people think of you why does it matter that people make fun of you? Your statement contradicts itself.

I don't know what to tell about the Escape vs. CR-V. One offers no advantantage over the other in traction. They are both open diffs. The only thing that may be holding back the CR-V is weight. If it truly would not make it up the same hill, it MUST be tires.

Huh? I didn't say people made fun me, or that I cared if they did. Please re-read my post. I drive a Pacifica as my company car; I get called a "Soccer Mom" all the time. I think it's funny and I think that is an accurate image of the typical Pacifica driver. I have a good sense of humor and can take good natured ribbing. Anyone offended by my posts had better avoid the comedy channel like the plague.

The friend who has the Escape is a Japanese/Toyota Lover. The Escape is a company car; he only likes the 4WD system and the engine in his Escape. Other than that he does not like his Escape so if anything he would be biased against the Escape. Maybe someone familiar with the 4WD systems on 5 year old Escapes and CR-V's can help us out here, have either of the systems improved or regressed?

Yes and the new Vue, Sky, Solstice, Astra, New Aveo, New 9.3 and this is all within 18 months. Why is GM supposed to abandon all markets? It is time Some people get a real look outside there box. GM has made ground in the samller car market. Room for improvment yes. Gloom and Doom No! Torrent and Equinox lead sales in this segment for over a year if I am not mistaken. Honda gets a new CR-V (light years ahead of the old one) and we all get tears in our eyes and throw in the towel. Not so fast. The new VUE will give it all it wants and crush it in many categories. 23 mpg in a CR-V is not exactly shutting down any wells in the Middle East is it?

Look at the whole picture before passing judgment.
In June GM sales were down 22% from a year ago. In July so far they are down 40% from a year ago. I am looking at the whole picture.

You have previously stated that a straight male wouldn't prefer the CR-V.

The CR-V uses a viscous clutch that engages the rear axles by about 2-3mph via a pump in the rear differential. It is a very simple system.

To be honest, I don't remember how the Escape system works even though I was a Ford tech when they came out.

Either way, if the rear tires are spinning, it's not the systems fault. It's tires or not nearly enough weight.

Of course the Liberty works better. It is a true 4WD system. It also is a piece of junk and gets miserable fuel economy.

Bias? No..

I think what this article is trying to do is compare the once best selling SUV, the Explorer, to the now best selling SUV (Crossover), the CR-V, showing the shift in the majority of American SUV/Crossover buyers. So now you know why the others were barely mentioned. They weren't the center focus of the article. In other words, is the Escape was number one (which I think it once was among small SUVs), it would've been the one getting the attention.
Except the CR-V isn't an SUV, as you so eloquently pointed out with your ().

Crossovers are not SUVs

I think of them as the equivalent of the modern day Station Wagon now...

I am inclined to agree, they are more wagon like than SUV like. Most of them are FWD, and thus have a LOT more in command with sedans than SUVs.

The CR-V will get the new engine from the upcoming Accord to keep it competitive. Honda pulled this same trick with the last gen CR-V. I doubt the Ford’s new engines will kill the CR-V.
No, it didn't. The previous (second) generation had the same 2.4L engine the whole time. The Accord got improvements to bump it to 166 hp from 160 (actually 156 under the original SAE test but they bumped it w/ the facelift) while the CR-V/Element always were the same (160 hp which fell in '06 to 156). It was always the same engine.

Yes we both obviously know what the CR-V is, but the majority of the public still refer to a higher vehicle with a hatch as an SUV. This is why oh so eloquently use those (), to make sure people know I know the difference. But, I say SUV since it's the term the article uses to refer to it as the word used by the masses.

I do agree with OldDood on the modern day station wagon. I guess since the public started to stray away from them, the CR-V and the like is what evolved.

The extra ground clearance over a station wagon is the only real difference for a CUV. With the mini-van and large SUV/pickup truck sales dropping off, the CUV competition will become very competative. GM needs to offer the best value in the Theta's, but they don't. Cheap engines and cheap interiors.
Make them in Mexico and Canada. Engines from Asia.

GM treats these CUV's as cheap low end cars with little profit margin value, when in reality it's the number one market segment for sales. Owning this segment could make a big difference to the bottom line.

I agree. The compact crossover segment could become the largest segment of the auto market within 5 years. That’s why I’m amazed GM has kept the crappy 3.4/Aisin 5 Speed drive-train in the Equinox. I guess the Chinese aren’t buying enough cars with 3.4L in them, so GM has decided to continue to send them to the US to save a few bucks. I can’t come up with any reason why they are still using the Aisin 5 speed Automatic. As I posted earlier, it would appear the 4T60E is a more efficient transmission than the Aisin based on the fuel economy numbers of the last generation Impala mated to the same engine.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw the 08 Equinox and Torrent weren’t at least upgraded to the 3.5L/4T60E combination. Does anyone on this board know for sure why GM has handicapped the Equinox for yet another year with the dreadful 3.4L/Aisin 5 Speed combination?

Because GM is cheap and refuses to allocate resources to be truly competitive on existing vehicles. But wait two more years and you will see the best Crossover the world has ever seen. GM will benchmark the current CRV as the standard for the 2010 nox....

Same old story.

I LOVE my 05 Equinox

Not trying to start anything AGAIN because this subject just gets beaten to death but the 3.4 and 5speed auto is a very good powertrain - smooth with good power and very acceptable fuel economy.

I laugh at some of the fuel economy numbers listed by people on CR-V sites like hondsuv.com

They seem capable of getting the same fuel economy or better than what we got out of our 2003 accord 5speed manual base coupe.

On our commute, down the 401 in RUSH hour we averaged 10l/100kms in the accord (with 2 people on board)

With the 05 Equinox we are averaging 12.5 l/100kms with 3 people on board

It seems some people say 'i get 26mpg' and everyone says so do I but is that all highway? what is the split?

for the record we just took the Equinox on a 2500km trip to the mountains north of Montreal and with 3 people+baby and 2 weeks worth of luggage and a sportrack rooftop carrier and air on etc etc we averaged 9.5l/100kms

That is with lots of mountain driving and trips to downtown Montreal and when on the highway we were always around 120kph (the wife got a ticket on the way there at 130 so we had to slow it down)

How much better would a CRV have been? no clue

One thing is for sure....the CR-V will NEVER have intake gaskets that leak, or any other Honda for that matter.

True, but I was being a bit sarcastic. No current Honda engine runs water through the intake manifold, therefore no leak.:)

L/kms?

Translate into miles per gallon please...

Some of you are absolutely nuts. The Equinox has all the charm and desirability of a herpes wart. It's "tweenie" sized, which means it's too big for the compact brigade, but not big enough for the midsizers, meaning many shoppers don't cross-shop it at all. Between the '81 Olds Omega powerplant and the $1.99 interior materials, I don't know which makes the 'nox the least attractive. GM really blew a big opportunity with this mistake.

And why is this? Because GM management is run by people like the majority of those who post in here: clueless fanatics who'll accept low-grade garbage and tout it as "best in class" simply because it has your favorite emblem on the grille. Just like a bar full of ********, GM management couldn't care less about anything in its stable except the Corvette and the 900s.

I don't want GM to go under, but if it does, it'll be GM's fault, not Honda's. This applies to Ford as well.
Will you still be spewing the same garbage when the Malibu, G8 and Astra (among others) arrive?
