Displacement & Demand

GM Holden spruiks Active Fuel Management on TV, but is yet to make it available.

The car-maker is using a new brand-building TV advertisement to announce that it will be introducing its Active Fuel Management, commonly known as displacement-on-demand, which shuts down half an engine’s cylinders when cruising.

This feature, which has already been made available by Chrysler and Honda, is not currently available on any Holden cars and the company has made no announcement as to when it may arrive.

Holden sources suggest the displacement-on-demand technology, which will only be made available for the V8 engine, will arrive at some stage this year.

The company could be planning to introduce the feature within months, given it has promoted the feature in advertisements.

I would have thought that since they were fitting it to the Pontiac G8's, that it would be relatively simple to offer it on Australian vehicles. The compliance reg's wouldn't be enourmously different since ADR's are progressively disappearing. It would also improve the efficiency of the production line when they are only installing only one version of the same engine.

Holden said a while ago that they had some kind of compatability issues for here and thats why they didnt offer it yet, not sure what the exact issues were though i cant remember.

It will be good when they finally offer this here, Holden need to show that they are commited to cars that offer good economy to as well as being seriously fast, I wonder if Holden will use the additon of DoD as a way to intorduce a Series 11 VE or if they will go with VF but which ever way they go the update should be mostly about fuel economy gains so they dont fall behind the new falcon and the aurion

The G8 just needs a Nav screen and probably a DI V6 along with a 6 speed auto (currently uses 5 speed auto) and a 6 speed manual for the V6 and V8.

Come on GM !!!!!
Problem with that is when you take the lessor models you miss out on some things..
They should offer Sat nav on the trip display on dash, We have options for sat nav in dash or centre.,

No VEII at all. Just mid life updates.

The blokes on Ford Forum are happy the V8 is only a few .04-.08 behind the XR6T for econemy.
I can't see why people can't be happy with a 10.7l/100 Commodore omega with 4 speed auto still!. It's only slightly more then a 5 speed Falc or 6 speed Falc.

When i was away in the Calais V6 my trip of over 1200km was 9.2lt/100, Highways hills and more hills i beat the **** out of the car and it never failed me on econemy.
I was passing cars in the tight back highways with only 1 lane @ 170 at times to get around slow arse trucks doing 40-60 up massive hills.
When you hire a car you drive it like you stole it:p. Just don't crash or get finned:D.

But i find people who bought them get better fuel econemy then car mags.

I'd love to know what they do when they test these cars for there official econemy ratings?.

Thanks JoeT, you've just increased my vocabulary. Must be purely Australian. Never heard the word while living in New Zealand.

I can honestly say that I have never used the word "spruiks" in a sentence before.
Yeah really... I've never heard it either.

It's unfortunate if it's a regulation thing that is dragging the AFM implementation down. A technical issue I could understand, but if it's on the G8... get'er done boys!

This riding the fence and spending tax dollars to do it is no kind of plan. If Pontiac is dead, than as of the date of the announcement, when everyone who has invested in their livelyhood with Pontiac dealerships, or faces losing their jobs, or whatever

Why I could spruik on for hours 'bout the great antipodean contributions to humanity, like the secret ballot. And the lawnmower... And the first vote for the ladies; well that was the damn Kiwis to blame for that one...

Spruiks? How do you even pronunce that... South African I would understand, it has a Dutch/Afrikaans feel to it (and I'd know how to pronunce it -> spr-ahw-ks), but Australian?
pronounced (sproo - ix).
Just basically means someone or something is excitedly talking something up. I guess haha.
I'm thinking Holden is holding things back a bit then unleashing alot of stuff with the next update. new 6-speed auto for V6 >>> and actually thats possibly why the 6-speed wasn't introduced with the regular Alloytec engines in the Commodore. Why waste funds on tuning it to an engine about to be replaced. I'm expecting a dual release of engine and transmission. Active Fuel Management will obviously be first. Visual update for exterior and interior, upgraded V8s. Holdens holding this back for a big surprise. This could be clever marketing to induce interets in the car again.

I mean, introducing all of these new features at the same time isn't really going to go unnoticed is it? Some good marketing/advertising, Holden could come out real big with this.
