Auto Plants: Battle to be the Best, a special report

DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group, after years of lagging the industry in factory productivity, is expected to move out of last place among the world’s major automakers in an annual study of North American manufacturing efficiency being released today.
The Harbour Report North America 2003 is expected to show that Chrysler made significant gains for a second consecutive year in 2003 and improved its position among Detroit’s Big Three automakers.
While Chrysler still trails swift Asian rivals such as Toyota Motor Co.p. and Nissan Motor Co., the company is beginning to see the payoff of an ongoing effort to make its factories more efficient.
