GM's February sales rose six percent year-on-year

DETROIT, United States : General Motors Corp. said it sold 353,117 new vehicles last month, up six percent over last year, on the back of strong car sales and buoyant truck sales.

In passenger cars, the world's number one automaker posted a nine percent increase year-on-year thanks to strong sales of its luxury brand Cadillac and entry-level cars such as the Chevrolet Cavalier and the Pontiac Sunfire.

GM truck sales were up four percent, led by deliveries of full-size pickups to 68,679 units.

"GM's February sales improved nicely compared to last month and the prior year, giving us momentum as we move into the spring selling season," said John Smith, head of GM North America sales and marketing.

pontiac sales up 19%!

wow! and with what? the newish GP... that's it! VERY impressive results for pontiac. i don't think anything else is significantly different than last february for pontiac.

and GM up 6%... more good numbers, especially since we still have the maxx... equinox... cobalt... and uplander (?!?) to add to the fold. things look very good.

(i still can't believe pontiac is up 19%! imagine when the G6 and solstice and SV6 and pursuit (canada) come on-line!)

Speaking of sales, here's a bit of interesting trivia I discovered upon perusing the pages of April 2004 Motor Trend:

MY 2004 MY2003 Change

Chevrolet Car 187,752 161,231 +16.5%

Toyota Car 184,878 195,315 -5.3%

Ford Car 172,314 192,587 -10.5%

Honda Car 144,216 166,521 -13.4%

MY 2003 October 2002 through December 2002
MY 2004 October 2003 through December 2003

I know this represents only 1 quarter of MY2004, but I must say that I was [pleasantly] surprised by Chevrolet's placement, particularly in light of the fact that Malibu was not yet at full capacity and we've yet to witness the first sale of the Cobalt. Hopefully, the momentum will continue, and Toyota will be quickly displaced from its throne as #1 purveyor of cars in the US. I despise how Toyota is already advertising their #1 car sales status for MY 2003.

I only regret that Ford has fallen so much. My patriotic side would like to see Chevy #1 and Ford #2. And I admit, I take a perverse delight in Honda's car struggles.

I know that part of Chevy's success is heavy incentives, whereas the Japanese aren't quite as enthusiastic about them, but I'll take a victory at this point in whatever form it comes!

I apologize that that "graph" looks so horrible in translation... Yikes!
Wow that's good for GM and hey the so called Lutz vehicles haven't even arrived yet.
