No direct successor to ATS, CTS when those models are renamed

Cadillac will not replace the XTS when it reaches the end of its lifecycle in 2019 signalling the end of the funeral and stretch limousine business for GM's luxury brand, GMInsideNews can report.

With the introduction of the new range-topping -- for now -- CT6 revealed last night, Cadillac will realign their products to better take on its German competition.

"As we move into the future refining our sedan portfolio, there will be no direct successor to the CTS. There will be no direct successor to the ATS. There is no point to renaming those cars because in the future those cars will disappear," said Johan de Nysschen at a private reveal last night for the Cadillac CT6.

Probably the only model within the Cadillac range with a question mark next to its future is the XTS. But, de Nysschen was quick to put rumors to bed regarding Cadillac's front-wheel drive sedan.

"Ultimately, a car like XTS when it reaches the end of its lifecycle, will not be replaced."

While retail customers likely won't miss the XTS, one group most definitely will: coachbuilders of funeral cars and stretch limousines.

"We will not have a car that will lend itself to these kind of modifications and we will probably withdrawal from those markets."

As expected.

But does this mean the president will replace his Caddy One with a German car like a Mercedes?

That would be something to get used to, the US president in a German luxury car for all to see.

I can see the CNN headline already: "Even the president of the USA ditches Cadillac". Not a great marketing move i can imagine.

HA I knew it! I mentioned Cadillac leaving this market before and got jumped on with a few saying Cadillac has a rich history of limos and hearses and should not leave this market and now they are!

This is a joke right. Happy April fools day. How do the ATS and CTS not have a direct successor?

There's no reason a well executed LaCrosse couldn't fill that gap. Or Lincoln I suppose can fight for the scraps of what's left.

Not until the end of 2019 so there is still time for one more presidential limo. Mark Fields already said they opted out of doing the presidential limo this time for Lincoln but AFTER Lincoln could come in with a new limo. Chrysler won't play at all I don't think.

The president doesn't ride in an XTS. Its a 100% custom car based on a Medium duty truck frame.

I'm assuming he means the nameplates, which will probably become something like CT2 and CT4.

They maybe splitting them? There are 5 numbers under 6 and CTS could be replaced by a CT5 and CT4? Maybe realigning them again. Or just suit and tie talk.

That's true but JdN made it sound like they are pulling out of the limo market entirely with this statement.

Everybody knows that, but it's still supposed to look like some kind of regular Caddy. People look at that car/truck and see an American Caddy.

Just imagine that truck looking like a nice luxury German Mercedes! That would be great marketing for the Germans.

"President ditches Cadillac for Mercedes".

If you still can't/won't see my point, well whatever than........

Thats exec speak. Of course they will have direct successors. There will be a compact car and a midsize car at Cadillac, sedans and at least one coupe. He's trying to make it sound like they will be totally different vehicles, and maybe they will, but the market segments will still be filled.

He could always ride in a Bentley -- ooops --- I meant Lincoln.

Not really JdN's decision. This would be a contract work with GM. Having a Cadillac as the Presidential limo has been nothing but good for Cadillac both domestically and abroad.

Car has to be made in America.

2019? That far out? I had always looked at the XTS as a bridge/place-holder until the CT6 arrives, and would be discontinued around 2017 when the Impala is due for a major refresh (or redesign new platform)

I guess Cadillac is projecting the XTS to sell well enough in its market segment for the next four years to keep around.

Wow, that shot of the XTS makes me realize how awesome the CT6 is. The XTS now feels like a Malibu with a Caddy front clip.

Buick Avenir could easily replace the XTS.
