GM Trademarks ‘Z71 Trail Boss’

A new GM trademark filing is hinting at a new off-road model.

The company has trademarked, “Z71 Trail Boss,” presumably for a new off-road focused truck, as the trademark is specifically for “light-duty trucks.” The Z71 package is available on GM’s trucks and SUVs and boosts off-road performance with larger shocks, skid plates, a locking rear differential and more.

This new Trail Boss model could apply to GM’s half-ton trucks or its new midsize twins, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. The company has already shown interest in leaving the pavement with the Colorado ZR2 Concept which was designed to tackle the trails.

With the recent reveal of the RAM 1500 Rebel and the new 2017 Ford Raptor, it seems like GM wants to get in on the fun and offer truck that can tackle the elements.

GM needs a Raptor competitor and the Z71 is a good base to start from. Not sure I like "Trail Boss" though.

^^Trail Boss? Like Rowdy Yates?

I love these "OFF ROAD" etc.-labeled trucks with the wheels and tires that look like they came off a military 5-ton cargo truck.
The most off road action they see is if they miss the driveway and skworsh the neighbor's grass.

Must be nearing approval, only a few more; focus groups, charts & graphs, and board meetings remain...........

If its on the Colorado, it should be ZR2, so can we assume this would be something on the K2XX Chassis?

Should hit product right about the time gas goes back over $4.00/gallon.

I'm the boss... I'm the boss, crap on Debra's desk.. like a boss
I am only going to be excited if it's a true competitor to the Raptor. Severely disappointed if this is just a Bilstein shock/skidplate combo and this is coming from a former Z71 owner.

How about a nice supercharged LT4 6.2L :)
Only if it comes with wider control arms/rear end, true off-road longer travel shocks, etc.
I actually like the name. Will it come with horns on the hood?

"Trail Boss" reminds me of a Polaris four wheeler.

I would like to hope the same. But just from the name alone, I can't help but to think of a sticker job on a half-ton truck from the '70s. Since the Z71 offers a few extra morsels to chew on, I hope this Trail Boss thing is a sweet dessert that is too sweet to dismiss. Is anyone else hungry?
I'm thinking it be something like the Silverado Polaris ACE+ Concept that was show at SEMA.
Why not just make 10 louder?

Z71 maybe could actually stand for something for a change. One of the few instances of alphanumeric naming that is actually really cool and they gotta add stuff to it.

But they can call it Al if its an actual package with substance.
I'm really hoping that this spells good things for the future of GM's full size trucks.
More in likely it is simply another appearance package...
How does GM get away with trademarking anything with "Boss" in it since Ford uses "Boss" for Mustangs?

Seems to me they would be better of marketing it as "Trail Blazer"...

Lift a new diesel Colorado, throw some 33" mudders on it, give it 4:10 gears, and put some rock sliders on it = Chevy Colorado Z71 Trail Boss

Intrigued. Trail Boss doesn't sound like very Raptor-y. Sounds more rock crawler-ish than dune hopper.

I think if they just offered a high riding/travel front suspension package and a decreased spring rates in back people would pay sticker for it.
I'm assuming this is going to be for another concept that they are "considering".
