Speaking at GM’s annual meeting earlier this week, CEO Rick Wagoner said that the HUMMER is under ’strategic review’ and that the brand may be receive a product lineup revamp or GM may completely sell the brand to another automaker.

Got an automotive brand to sell? It doesn't matter how it's performing in the marketplace, whether its products are outdated or just not popular in the present buying climate. If you've got one, an Indian automaker wants to buy it. At least that's the way it seems after learning that two Indian automakers, Tata and Mahindra, have approached General Motors to purchase the HUMMER brand. GM only announced that it would begin considering what to do with HUMMER this week.

Tata has already gobbled up Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford, but apparently is still hungry for some more American-owned metal, and what's more American than HUMMER? Mahindra, meanwhile, will be bringing its diesel-powered Appalachian pickup to the U.S. market by the end of 2009. Tata and Mahindra tend to go after the same things, as both were bidders for Jaguar/Land Rover and both are competing for the right to own motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta. Of course, neither India-based company is commenting on their interest in HUMMER and GM's all like, "Whoa, we just said we were thinking about it" (not an actual quote). HUMMER sales last month fell 60.2% last month compared to May 2007, and with gas prices going up and up, the poster brand for insensitive consumption may not have long to live under the GM corporate umbrella.

Why not?

I'd feel badly for all those dealers that have spent lots of money building or renovating their stores for Hummer.

Tata's becoming like the pawn shop of the automotive world...got a division you don't want? Turn it into cash at Tata!

Good deal- let 'em have it!! Fuel prices are not going down and soon enough Hummer will become unprofitable. They'll sell so few that the dealerships will close or they'll have to start charging even more for them. I say be thankful for the ride, GM, but now is the time to get off!!

I really don't see the problem. It doesn't matter who builds Hummers, they still need a dealership network. GM's dealer's could continue to sell Hummers at their stores or lease the space out to whoever buys the Hummer brand.

Re: Tata wants to buy HUMMER

It's the only brand GM could sell as the rest they've rendered virtually worthless.

Sadly, HUMMER is also the only really unique brand GM has that can only do what it does, not unlike Jeep. The rest of GM's brands are completely interchangable.

I think they should keep Hummer and bring out smaller versions then through every fuel saving technology into it.

Re: Tata wants to buy HUMMER

They need to auction off the Hummer brand name and dealer network to the highest bidder. If it's Tata, so be it.

All of the future Hummers under development (H4 and future versions of H3 and H3T) can be given to GMC. Maybe "Professional Grade" will mean something when attached to a Wrangler-sized, off-road capable, body-on-frame SUV, as opposed to a Pontiac Torrent replacement.

H4 is done son, you can bet GM froze that immediately.

GMC is another gas-guzzling brand whose time to be phased out has come.

Agreed. Utility and 4x4 is not out, largess and excess is out. Recreational vehicles won't go away... weekend warriors might.

The H2's days are #'rd but perhaps Hummer could support a 3-4 model range with the H3 on top. The H3T should have had a Avalanche-esque midgate. Hopefully, the HX will become the H4 before long.

New name from Tata to Haha brand. :)
Yeah, and 30 years ago we sneezed at Toyota and Honda the same way. 10 years ago (or thereabouts) Kia and Hyundai got some laughs.

Look who's laughing now...
