GM says 19,000 US hourly workers will take its latest buyout and retirement offers

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Corp. said Thursday that a quarter of its U.S. hourly workers will take the company's latest buyout and early retirement offers, opening the door for new hires who will make less money.
The automaker said Thursday that 19,000 workers had agreed to take the buyout offers and leave the company by July 1. GM offered buyouts to all 74,000 of its U.S. hourly workers in February.
GM never said how many workers it hoped would take the buyouts, but under a new labor agreement reached last fall with the United Auto Workers union, GM may hire up to 16,000 non-assembly workers at half the old wage of $28 per hour. GM said it would fill job openings with current employees wherever possible, but would also be hiring new workers.

Here at my plant we are already planning on getting some new insourcing business since they can pay the new guys 14 to 18 bucks an hour and not 28. I think i over heard close to 400 jobs will be created by the end of the first quarter next year with bring back jobs that were lost many years ago so lower paying people can do them.

Any auto employees, I am wondering what your options are if you get laid off from your job? Obviously you are well-qualified but what percentage of workers would you say consider going back to some vocational school (like Universal Technical Institute) to learn more skills to stay competitive versus going back to school to learn skills for other fields of work vs. just going and getting a somewhat related job without going back to school?
