Detroit - The first photographs of Chevrolet's all-new Cruze sedan - making its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October - reveal a dynamic four-door coupe that proves exciting design and value are not mutually exclusive.

On sale beginning in Europe from March next year, Cruze features a dramatic re-interpretation of the traditional sedan featuring Chevrolet's new global design language that is becoming a signature on all new products carrying the gold bowtie.

Cruze's arching roof-line, extending from the steeply raked windshield to its sloping rear pillars and short rear deck, brings coupe-like proportions to a compact sedan.

Wider and longer than most of its competitors, Cruze has a purposeful stance with its wheels located at the outer edges of the tautly drawn bodywork. Noticeably tight body panel fits and a restrained use of exterior trim add to a high quality, 'hewn from solid' appearance.

Cruze's dramatic profile is matched by bold front styling, with large headlamp housings that wrap around the front corners and sweep up, arrow-like, into the fenders and sculpted hood. Other distinct design themes include a concave shoulder line, the two-tier grille and a "wheels-out/body-in" stance. Inside, Cruze features a 'twin ****pit' design motif, first introduced in the iconic Corvette sports car.

"Our goal in designing Cruze was to be bold, not evolutionary," says chief designer Taewan Kim. "We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world."

Visitors to the Paris show will see how Chevrolet's progressive design is also reflected in the quality of Cruze's interior. The use of grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels ensures a quality ambience that echoes the clean, harmonious design of the exterior.

At launch in Europe, Cruze will be available with 16-valve, 1.6-liter (112 hp/82 kW) and 1.8-liter (140 hp/103 kW) gasoline engines featuring variable valve timing (VVT) on both inlet and exhaust sides, giving more power as well as better fuel economy and lower emissions. A new 2.0-liter turbo diesel, developing 150 hp/ 110 kW and 320 Nm of torque adds power with even greater frugality. Five-speed manual gearboxes and an all-new automatic transmission, Chevrolet's first six-speed application in the compact segment, complete the powertrain menu.

With sales in Europe up by 23 percent for the first six months of 2008, Chevrolet is GM Europe's fastest-growing mainstream brand. The arrival of Cruze spearheads an exciting new product roll-out program that is expected to propel the brand to even greater success.

"We are proud that Europe is leading the introduction for this global product," said Wayne Brannon, Executive Director, Chevrolet Europe. "Chevrolet has always stood for expressive value and Cruze delivers on that promise like never before. It further redefines Chevrolet with its design, quality, materials and great style inside and out. The fit and finish for gaps and interfaces sets a new standard for this segment in Europe and around the world."

Cruze is the result of a development process harnessing GM's global expertise and is the first of a new family of compact products that will deliver world class quality. It will be backed by expected highest scores in all major crash safety ratings.

The Chevrolet Cruze will be available in Europe from March 2009, followed by other global markets with regional-specific engine choices.

Re: GM Releases More Information On New Chevrolet Cruze

That is one very nice looking vehicle.

Bring it on!
Yes. Very, very sexy. I like it a lot.

bet this means no diesels for the USA. The Chevrolet Cruze will be available in Europe from March 2009, followed by other global markets with regional-specific engine choices.

Again, I can not wonder why GM is trying to pump up people with info about a car that is scheduled as a 2011 model.

While the Cruze is a nice car, you do not see other car makers touting models that are 2+ years away. GM always does this, and by the time the car finally hits the market, there is already something better.

GM, keep these under wraps and surprise us months - not years - ahead of time like other car makers do.

A six-speed automatic transmission in a compact IS pretty groundbreaking my friend...especially from GM. And although not mentioned here, the 1.4L turbo promised to this car is meant to produce circa 45 mpg. That, from a car that approaches midsize proportions, is also groundbreaking... As far as looks, it is of course all in the eye of the beholder, but I think the front-end looks spectacular and I'd give the rear an 8 out of ten. For a compact car, this is very sharp looking in my humble opinion. As far as the "Korean looks" comments, forgive me I don't see it.

Even my die hard Saturn loyal co-workers like it. That says something.

Too bad you can't buy it for another two years....

I remain unmoved. And, seriously, it's a 2011 model. I care not to see a car that I can't buy for at least another 18 months.

As someone else said, bring back the '50s. Friday, November 4, 1955--the day the new '56 Chevrolets would be unveiled at your local dealer AND ready for purchase. Until then, it was all under wraps. GM died a long time ago. This current company is just using their name.

Car looks great

Problem 1: Overseas availability before U. S. What gives?
Problem 2: Why can't they keep a name around, why can't this be the redesigned Cobalt, instead of needing a new name?
Problem 3: Cobalt is a nice car, but people here won't take it seriously when they see what's coming, so who's going to buy Cobalts now?

Yea, let's give the rest of the world great product, while here in the U.S. people continue to buy "great product" from foreign makers. All in the name of "GLOBAL ECONOMY". So sick of hearing that. EVERYTHING, not car related, is MADE IN CHINA, it's crazy. So, the only real thing you can buy still made in the U. S. that makes a difference is vehicles, but when the other countries are receiving our really awesome exports before we do, what the he** is wrong with this picture? I'm all for exporting, but don't we deserve it first, or at the very least, the same time? I'm totally confused and frustrated with this news.

As for the car itself.....great!

they can't use cobalt name because the name cobalt has been associated with a cheap noisy car by the websites and the car magazines and it would never sell in europe

#27 ·
supposedly whats keeping it from being for sale here is that the 1.4T isnt ready or the tooling for it isnt ready yet. if the most powerful gas engine in the european version is the underwhelming 1.8 thats used in the astra then id rather wait

Yawn. Wide-mouth bass caricature face now migrates to the Cobore replacement and is grafted onto a previous Generation Hyundai. Now that's progress! Definitely not much of an upgrade and a sign of desperation - it's 2008 and GM is releasing pics of a 2011 model (albeit being introduced in 2010). When you factor in that this vehicle is still almost two years away, this design is absolutely dull - not what GM needs - it will be stale the moment it hits the road - typical GM - designing for five years ago and wondering why they have to price them for consumers at employee prices!

It is being shown too soon, but it looks fantastic. Very aggressive front end. This is a car I'd buy.

The 18 month thing is silly though... why is GM showing what appear to be near-production drawings a year and a half out? The Camro was bad enough... but this is a basic compact car we're talking about. There's no way to keep people excited about an econobox for almost 2 years.

Now i wonder if they can design a really nice Pontiac face for it, put a 240Hp turbo Ecotech motor in it and you have a nice Pontiac G5 maybe even a 280-300Hp gxp model to, surely that would make for a better G5 model then what they have now plus it would give Pontiac a decent small sporty car.

#31 ·
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop the rebadging. One car. One marketing campaign. One set of parts = economies of scale.

#32 ·
Its not being shown too soon.
It will be on sale in Europe in less then 7 months.
We were going to see it now, at the Paris show, or in 7 months, which would still be a year away.
They showed it 7 months before it goes on sale in Europe.
Stop with the "showing it too soon" comments.
Back in the 50's, there was no internet, there was no massive forms of press to get this info out. You waited for next months car magazine.
This is not teh 50's.

#34 ·
But it won't be on sale in the US until 2010...GM should have been ready to launch this Global car in all markets next year - even if that meant killing the Cobalt a year early. GM has their collective head in the sand.

#35 ·
It looks ok if a little bland on the sides. I wish Chevy would make the tail lights round to give a family resemblance and I hope they offer a bodyside molding option and offer more aggressive looking sport versions with rocker flares etc. Cars are all looking way too plain and alike for my taste.

#37 ·
Nice! But I kinda agree with the guys that are saying that the pics and specs. are being released too early these days.
Lets the competition react before our product is even available......
