This hardly sounds like anything new. We've been kicking around the 310/520 numbers for what seems like six months or more.
But the economy part hasn't been (at least what I have seen). Looks like it will be the same as the two-mode, percentage wise, but the highway mileage will be a lot higher which is good for me. I can't wait for official numbers.

When diesel is already 'premium' priced......it doesn't quite make much sense to price the trucks into the stratosphere.

I understand the technology, tooling & everything has to be paid for.....but there needs to be some kind of balance somewhere.

I know what you're talking about, but on the plus side, diesel is about 17% higher than regular fuel, so if you're buying 25% less fuel you're still doing ok. you're also getting 520lb-ft, which has got to make driving a lot more fun. Maybe in the future we'll see a big I4 or small V-6 Duramax that has 225hp and 375lb-ft for even more fuel economy.

So true.

That differential just came down a bit - more like 14.85% and we'll just have to wait and see if this one can run the currently typical real world diesel numbers above even the 2008 EPA results.

Tier2 Bin5 may change that .

I really hope they mate this engine to a 6spd manual transmission.

GM will probably charge a premium for the diesel and for the six speed auto that goes with it. If it cost more than $3500 over the base 4.8L engine ($2500 over the 5.3L), then I say good luck selling them. Diesel is $0.70 per gallon higher than gas right now. These diesels already look too big, heavy, and powerful for half ton trucks. With the new emission standards, diesels are getting much worse MPG they used to...so I doubt we will see better than 19 mpg on this truck. The Ford Powerstrokes are barely making double digits, and the new Duramaxes are more thirsty than the origionals too.
The output in this 4.5L is awefully high for most half ton users.
I'd be happy with a 3.0L engine that puts out 350 lb-ft and 200 horsepower if I could get it with a six speed manual...that should break into the mid twenties mpg easily.

And being GM, they will only allow the 4.5L on crew cab LTZ models equipped with the in dash navigation system and only in certain colors with the optional moon roof, unless it has the bedliner in which case only gas engines are offered.

That last part is a joke. The diesel will probably only be offered on premium models though. This is General Motors, where the laws of supply, demand and logic do not apply.

When they say 25% better fuel efficiency, do they mean 25% better than the 5.3L gasoline V8, 6.0L V8 or the 6.6L Duramax?

The Duramax drivers I know are averaging about 14 in an HD truck where the 5.3L is averaging about 17 in the half ton trucks and 6.0L engines are at about 14mpg ish.

The fuel efficiency is going to be a really big part of the success or failure of this engine. The American government seems to be anti-diesel in their regulation, so it's going to be that much more difficult to meet standards here.

I would say the 5.3L simply because it is the most widely used and its the most fuel efficient.

As for the torque numbers, I always thought diesels got better mpg's becasue of the higher torque number. The HD's would be an exception becuase they weigh some 2,500lbs more than the light duty's.

If the torque number on the the 4.5L was only 350, how would it get better mpg than the comparable 6.0L which has basially the same amount of torque? Is it becuase the torque curve is a lot lower and flater? Just asking...

Diesel fuel has more energy per gallon than gasoline, can run much leaner, and at a higher compression ratio.

My 6400 pound 2500HD with Duramax averages 18-19 in mixed dutire - about 70% highway, but that mileage figure also includes the times when I am towing.

I haven't seen any mention of who did the development work for this engine. The 6.6 Duramax was designed by Isuzu and has obviously been a success. I'm concerned that GM may have done more work on this one. We all remember the last diesels GM designed mostly on their own. Not exactly a confidence builder.

Time will tell!

Trucks aside, this will make one incredible RV engine! Currently, the only way you can get a Duramax in a motor home is with the Kodiak chassis. The Vortec 8.1 and 6.0 are the only GM options. Tons of Triton V10s out there. The 4.5L Duramax will have more torque than the 8.1 and better mileage than the 6.0. Perfect!

That's just a little unfair. GM is not the same company it was 25 years ago. Besides, the LT1/LT4 and LS1/2/3/4/6/7/9/A all seem to be doing alright.
