GM Ignition Switch Deaths Hit 51, Expected to Continue Rising

2215 Views 21 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Ed753

The fallout from a defective ignition switch is getting worse for General Motors.

So far, 51 claims have been deemed eligible for compensation in connection with deaths that occurred because of a faulty ignition switch installed in about 2.6 million small cars. That number will 'absolutely' rise from there, fund deputy administrator Camille Biros told Automotive News.

Eligible claims for catastrophic injuries sit at eight while 69 claims are eligible over less serious injuries. So far, 4,180 claims seeking compensation from GM have been received, though more may still come in.

WTF! As I predicted when Auto Guide posted 50 here last week that we were in for a banner headline every incremental step of the way on these death claims. It is absurd that this is what GMI has become. Someone PLEASE explain the relationship of Auto Guide to this forum. GM gets that they screwed up. WE get that GM screwed up and lives were lost. DONE with having to have this thrown in our faces nonstop as if we are morons. WHERE ARE THE MODS?????????????????

They're powerless to stop it I'd imagine. AG owns the forum.

Autoguide posted last week's article as a banner headline, which we moved because it simply wasn't worthy enough of that position on the page. It was news, but certainly nothing earth-shattering, so it was repositioned.

The current article, while certainly not flattering to GM, is a legitimate news story, only this time, it is appropriately placed in the news ticker.

The staff here at GMI is in overall agreement with the numerous complaints about the content and placement of AutoGuide posts, and we're doing what we can to make sure they're handled appropriately. At the same time, this is still legitimate news and thus, does have a place here.

As we've always said, GMI is a news site, not a fan site. If you don't like the content of a particular post, feel free to skip right over it. No one is forcing you to read things that upset you.

Yes GMI'ers get it, I can bet that there is only 1 key that goes into your ignition as we speak.

But does GM get it? 1, 2 cent part has cost 50 some families to bury a Loved One. Or are they just trying to cover up the mess?

The way GM handled the first couple of Customers I have come across, "Take their key rings and remove every key except the Ignition Key, and give it back to the customer" "We will call when the parts are in" Doesn't give you a Warm Fuzzy Feeling.

Is this a time warp? Why is there a new story every single week? Next week will there be a new article with 52 deaths? It's getting "legitimately" old.

The only part of this story that is old was back in 2002'ish when whoever at GM decided it was smarter to release an out of specification part.

Fact is, you'd have a much different take, and a much lower tolerance for GM incompetence than you do now, if it was one of your friends or family members among the thousands that was hurt/killed because of this.

Originally GM accept liability to 13 deaths and another handful of injuries, now we are at 52 deaths and how many injuries? - Considering for each death, at least 1 million is awarded, its news buddy.

Most of them likely specious.
A bunch of the "claims" that were already filed were for cars that don't even have the switch in question.
Ambulance chasers are throwing crap against the wall, hoping some of it sticks.

Would you put everyone that files their taxes in April in the same category?

Ever hear of "working backwards" with regard to project/timeline?

Ever hear the phrase no need for an attorney to work fast and get things settled when there is still money to spend?

Do you think the 13 number GM used early last year was more or less specious than the 51 number used today?
As we've learned, "eligible for compensation" and attributable death (to the switch defect) are 2 different things. As such, the AG headline is misleading, not to mention annoyingly repetitive. The claims review process errs on the side of "could have been the switch", not "definitely was the switch." That's in part due to the reality that so many of these cases happened a long time ago, and there's little to no opportunity to gather all the evidence that would be required to prove or disprove. But as far as I'm concerned, the original number of 13 deaths has a lot more credence.

A bunch of claims have already been rejected for the reason I stated.
No reason to believe this is not a crap-throwin' flurry when a bunch of it is already running down the wall.
so why does this stuff get posted, yet monthly sales figures don't get posted anymore?

This site is turning into crap! Thanks auto guide!

no but for real, why the hell aren't monthly sales figures posted anymore? Its really damn annoying.

Is this a news site or is it a discussion forum? If it's a news site, stop building it on VBulletin and make it into a legit news website with commenting on articles. A news site hires editors to provide content. GMI relies on its (unpaid) members to provide content as well as a few admins/mods. That's a discussion forum. A huge problem with this site is it tries to do too much. Look at the number of forums: it's obnoxious, unnecessary, and not user friendly. The forums need to be pared down and simplified and the people who make the decisions (and the money) need to decide what they want the site to be.

"A Bunch" also have been approved............. going from 13 originally, to 19 in September to over 50 today.......... and that doesn't count the injured cases.

All good reasons not to approve an out of spec part, or worse after producing it for years and installing it in millions of cars, fix it and not change the part number as if you have something to hide........ :yup:
Yawn..........................:tired:
I get it, you're tired of seeing a post about the ignition fiasco everyday. I think most of GMI is, but that doesn't change the fact that 51+ people died, many of them people my age or younger (I'm in my mid twenties).

Have a little respect, you don't like it don't read it.

Hey, if you think it is news, so be it. I used to run a wrecker back in the day and saw some nasty stuff. Yes, bad things happen to good people. I have t-shirts and jackets that are 30 years old.

I since 2003, Have treated this Site as a "Suggestion Site" Where the "Customers, can try to offer GM Suggestions, as to what they want and need out of their vehicles."

The average Joe/Jill Customer could care less if the New Camaro has 30 or 600HP. Most people that post here will never buy one anyways.

Just listen to your Customer Base GM, and go from there. "Since 2003 They have been Screaming on this Site as to what they want." Has GM been listening?

Anyway's I want GM to make it, but they seem to have Blinders on.
