Re: Dealership Closing List (letters)

Can any one explain how closing or leaving dealerships open effects GM? Dealers are an independent business. GM owes them money for rebates, the dealer pays floor plan and other fees. GM collects rent for the signage, gm collects rent for the use of autobook and other internet services. GM makes money on parts, catalogs etc. How does closing them and loosing income effect GM? I dont understand this mentality.

they have a distorted view that if they have less dealers in an area, the values of their vehicles will go up. thats it in a nutshell. they have been wanting to do this for years. i dont know if you remember a thing called 'project 2000' back in the mid nineties. it was basically their marketing idea going forward. they were going to merge their brands, dump the brand names and just end up with a GM brand. they are well on their way to doing that.

coincidentally, one of the main things that they wanted dealers to do under the 'project 2000' was to take on a uniform 'modern' appearance for each gm dealership. it just so happens that the 'modern appearance' is a criteria in this newest scorecard for the dealers that will be closed.

Your percent correct. I think one of GMs best assets are its huge dealer network. But I think the thinking is that having fewer dealers that make more money will allow those dealers to better invest in their businesses and help customers better. And they should get rid of the under performing dealers. Its just a right sizing you must realize that the dealer network was created in the early 1900s many stores are just in the wrong place. I will share this email with you from a friend of mine who works for GM and his family has a chevy store.

"Performance is only part of the equation.

The problem is this: our dealer body was created in the 1910s and 1920s -- dealers are, in many cases, in the wrong spot.

Example: we have "performing" dealers on Long Island -- but there are 24 Chevy dealers -- and 5 Toyota dealers -- and Toyota outsells us 4 to 1 - --

We need perhaps 10 Chevy Dealers - BUT -- they need to be in the right location...........

So performance is only part of it............

The good news? Every dealer will know where they stand in the next 30 or so days "

Re: Dealership Closing List (letters)

looks like the news outlets are finally picking this story up.

Re: Dealership Closing List (letters)

Yeah got ours pulled up the latest report from DEC is a 92. but that was because of a few bad CSI scores and bad winter month profits. We are on average a 140.

Re: Dealership Closing List (letters)

saw this on the local NBC web site here in Los Angeles.
it has a list of the Chrysler dealers closing.... But look at the last one...
its a Cadillac Pontiac dealer....

I take it that this dealer also sells Chrysler and they ommited the Chrysler part?

Valley Dodge in Van Nuys; Kirby Oldsmobile in Ventura; Murphy and Shelby Dodge in San Fernando; Sowell Automotive in La Quinta; Courtesy Motors Autocenter Inc. in Chico; Carson Chrysler-Jeep in Carson; Union Dodge in Garden Grove; Urban Automotive Group in Foothill Ranch; and Butts Cadillac Pontiac in Seaside

the article.

The flaw in their thinking is this.

i.e. Chrysler's own words "In 2008 Chrysler sold 1 million vehicle, through a Dealer Network of 3298 dealers, thats an average of 303 cars per dealer.Toyota sold approx 1.605 million vehicles through 1242 dealers, an average of 1292 vehicles per dealership."

Well you can't turn a 300 New car dealership into a 1300 car dealership. Even 25% more volume could mean extra F&I offices, Techs, and wash bay people.

Re: Dealership Closing List (letters)

Just learned that there will be a conference to today at 12 noon to dealers to explain its dealer reduction plan. Fed Ex letters or a call should be at your dealership today.
Good Luck. Keep us informed
