BlackGTP I normally agree with you, but other than the really good Lyriq commercials, and the electric Chevy commercials, which you can’t buy, I don’t see any other great advertising from GM! What am I missing?
As noted below, the "cat" commercials, there were also the sentimental ones they were doing over the holidays the past couple of years quickly come to mind. I did a quick youtube search to refresh my memory - a good Hummer ad with animated crabs was pretty cool. GMC Sierra Denali hand free driving to Queen's We Will Rock You - maybe not THE best, but decent. Edward Scissorhands Lyriq self driving commercial. Not every commercial is "the best", but in general a lot better than 10 or even 5 years ago.

Whal started in 2018, I figure it took her a couple of years to fix internally whatever was wrong with their marketing and in the past two or so years we are seeing the fruits of these changes.

I'm not necessarily saying she's THE best, but I don't see anything all that bad to deserve GMI venom. And so far in this thread I've seen the venom with little support. I see advertising that has improved over dancing robots.

Does anyone know if Deborah Wahl was responsible for this Cadillac marketing while she was their chief marketing officer: Audacity: Our Commitment to Equity and Justice | Cadillac ?
Yes, Wahl was ultimately responsible for that vomit inducing drivel. She was Cadillac CMO from March 2018 to September 2019, at which point GM promoted Wahl to General Motors CMO. In the latter position, Wahl approved Cadillac's Audacity campaign which launched in 2021.

So in other words, she's a moe-ron.

Ford’s cat ad was more ‘cutting edge’ 😱
That may be the most "cutting edge" automotive advert of all time! 😮

This odd, but far more tame Chevrolet advert from the 1960s, compared Corvair to cats:

The the Question is then, "Why did Cadillac Hire Her, and GM promote Her so quickly?"
Old Army saying, eff up and move up. Some bureaucracies just kick this driftwood upstairs rather than deal with a messy divorce. So people get promoted well beyond their level of incompetence. Yes we can!

+1
This is known as the "Peter Principle", and Deborah Wahl's career at GM exemplifies it perfectly.

Again, I've seen zero examples of incompetence.

Hanging your hat on a single comment and an ad campaign where GM was jumping on the exact same bandwagon basically every other corporation was and also at the same time GM was being forced into doing something like this by outside pressures. GMI had a couple of threads on this and probably all shut down - so tread lightly on the topic.

Give me an example of actual incompetence. I'm not saying she's the best thing since sliced bread, but I've seen nothing to suggest incompetence to the level that is being inferred here. She is not responsible for 30 years of bad advertising or the structure she inherited.

From day one GMI has been screaming "incompetent" - a chance wasn't even given to her. I suspect she could've invented sliced bread and that wouldn't be enough.

At worst you can say she's done an average job. And with the sorry state of GM's advertising over the past 20+ years I'd say getting GM up to average is a huge accomplishment.

Just be realistic.

See posts #5 and #22.

Also, review GM's current marketing strategies that position Ultium based products and services for long term success. Actually, don't bother because GM doesn't have any!

And I addressed both of those in post #33 and earlier. The same comments can be made of pretty much any major corporate marketing executive. Marketing's purpose is to blow enough empty words to get you to part with your money. You just know her empty words because you follow GM - I read up on many businesses - she's not doing anything any other corporation doesn't also do. Most of the big corporations were tripping over themselves to show their equality - GM is no different. If you weren't a GM fan you'd probably never even have seen their equality promotions.

Point me to the dancing robot and real people moment of terrible, mainstream advertising.

Wahl is a veteran auto marketer, having held brand strategy, communications and marketing roles with Ford, Toyota, Mazda and Chrysler during her career. When GM CEO Mary Barra promoted her to the global CMO role in late 2019, she became the first person to hold that title at the automaker since 2012.
^^Google Search^^.
Prior to joining General Motors, Wahl served as the senior vice president and CMO for McDonald’s from 2014 to 2017, where she played a key role in the brand’s turnaround, proudly bringing All Day Breakfast to consumers. In addition to McDonald’s, Wahl has held a number of CMO and marketing leadership positions, including at PulteGroup, Chrysler and Lexus
» ^^Deborah Wahl | Automotive Hall of Fame ^^And she's how old? Been here, there, and everywhere. Take it for whatever you want to take it for but to me that raises eyebrows. 🛴 (Sadly all day breakfast died when the pandemic and the shortages hit :( FWIW.) .........
