Celebrity Drive: Glenn Beck
Talk Show Host Doesn't Hide His Passion for American Cars, Thinks Highly of Hydrogen Power
By K.S. Wang

Daily Driver: 2006 Cadillac Escalade (Glenn's rating: 10 on a scale of 1 to 10)
Other car: 2005 GMC Yukon Denali (rating: 7.5)
Favorite road trip: Across the country
Car he learned to drive in: 1976 Toyota Celica
First car bought: 1969 MG convertible

As the newest face on Fox News Channel's afternoon lineup, talk radio host Glenn Beck is on fire. If you don't recognize him from his old show on Headline News, he's the guy who comes on at 5 p.m. eastern, looks into the camera and sometimes flails his hands for effect or makes funny faces to catch your attention when proving a point.

Beck has the whole hour to dispense his libertarian view of the day's events in his sardonic style and viewers are noticing. In February "Glenn Beck" was the third most watched cable news show after "Hannity" and "The O'Reilly Factor" and Beck only joined on FNC in January. In such a short time, Beck has improved his time slot 100 percent in ratings.

When it comes to car talk, Beck is also in fifth gear with his trademark passion and conviction. Make no mistake, Beck is patriotic and thus he owns American cars. He's since become an ambassador for General Motors, through his radio show. "I had all my GM cars before I was an ambassador for GM," Beck says. "The reason I took them on is because I love them."

He gets the perk of test driving GM cars when he visits Motor City, including a GMC Acadia (which he loved) and a hydrogen fuel cell car, which he drove a few months ago for a whole month. "I loved it!" he exclaims. "It's quiet, it has acceleration like you wouldn't believe. The only problem is -- no hydrogen stations. Shell is working on that, they're partnering with them."

Beck said it's a small little car that "looks pretty gutless" but it's not. "It really has power," he says. "It blew me away. I would buy one in a heartbeat. They want to put it out for $24,000. It's not a Bentley. But for $24,000, it ain't a $24,000 car, I'll tell you that!"

Before he test drove the hydrogen car, Beck had a conversation with execs at GM about their new cars. "I said, 'Really, serious -- what do you have buried in the basement? What about the hydrogen car?' They said, 'Yeah, we've got it, we're working on trying to get the fuel cell.' They got a little testy with me and said, 'Glenn, we can create anything, we can build anything but we need somebody that will give us the policies and then not change them on us once we retool. You tell us what we need to build and we'll build the damn car, we're Americans and we can do it.' I just love that attitude."

Beck gives his 2006 Cadillac Escalade a perfect 10. "It's smooth, everything just seems to be placed right in it," Beck says. "It's solid. I had a Range Rover before that and I hated that car, it was always in the shop, it was always having trouble. It was the opposite of what I thought a Range Rover would be."

I enjoy a lot of his rants, but rarely see him because of work and family. I am sure he will still be ranting away when my daughter no longer thinks I am cool to hang out with.

I like this guy. I was wondering where he went after he left MSNBC.

I guess I have to watch.

That's the attitude they should have. We are Americans. You can't say that we are not creative enough to attract those buyers...it's just a matter of spending the money to design and build it. It's absurd that they are losing market share to Honda and Toyota when you have that attitude. It goes to show you how bad things are with their structure and labor.

That's a GMT-900 Escalade...and a GMT-800 Yukon XL Denali...

Model year of the Escalade wrong, and the model of the Yukon wrong.

I'm glad to see there's someone in the media that still supports GM, though.

I'm sorry but Beck's praises of GM ring hollow especially when GM is/has been a sponsor of his show - and most of the conservative talk shows on the radio. It goes without saying that one cannot praise GM these days since it is the most poorly run vehicle producer in North America and one of the worst managed ever.

I'd have more respect for Mr. Beck - whom I listen to daily, btw - if he was honest about GM's problems and didn't simply mask them as intros to commercials. The smoke with which he blows up our keisters with regard to GM is laughable - he says he's seen what's coming and it is impressive - but that is hard to swallow with his carte blanche praise for the company now.

Just remember it was I who warned of the situation with regard to GM years ago and that I cut through the spin and the smoke and told it like it was. I've long mentioned I love many GM cars from the past that were rear wheel drive but I must insist that GM's front wheel drive small and mid-sized vehicles are complete and utter junk. Give me a early to mid-1980's rear wheel drive Monte Carlo SS or Olds Cutlass or a Buick GNX or a Pontiac Grand Prix and I'd be in complete heaven - those were roomy and competent vehicles even if the sheet metal was thin and the paint was poorly applied.

There can simply be no credible praise for GM or its vehicles at the current time. GM has for the past two decades simply settled for "good enough" while managing to miss many details (family cars without rear seat room for families - SUV's without any room in the back for passengers (knee room simply unavailable).

Beck is wrong. GM can only be praised when they return the money we loaned them with interest and start to produce WORLD CLASS vehicles.

Does anyone find it interesting that the conservative talking heads drive and support the big 3 while the current administration mostly drive foreign brands, if they even support owning personal cars AT ALL?

I've liked Glenn since 2001 when I stumbled upon his radio show. He had the Denali back when he was only doing radio from Tampa. There are, of course, some things I don't agree with him on, like Ethanol, but he's hilarious and a genuine guy. I'd vote for him if he ran for an office.

Nerf Hoffelmeyer for President, 2012.

Again with the bizarre definition of "patriot." I have only driven GM, but I wouldn't consider myself any more patriotic than my neighbor who only drives Honda's.

I wouldn't consider him a conservative talking head. He pisses of both sides so he is much closer to center. At least much closer to center than anyone else on that station.

It's yet another example of GM marketing preaching to the choir. Beck's audience tends to be older, rural, and conservative - an audience GM doesn't (or until the financial collapse) didn't have problems reaching. They primarily drive trucks and SUV's, segments that GM and Detroit in general tend to dominate.

This doesn't help on iota in reaching, younger, urban audiences that have absolutely zero interest in driving a Silverado.

I don't know, I'd call him conservative...but a conservative with principles. People with principles always piss off zealots on their own side. Like Alexander II of Russia.

What I find interesting is that this lie has been posted for two hours without challenge or deleted due to its political content.

Without getting into the slanderous and false politics of your post which I hope will be deleted soon, let me ask you, what cars do you know the "current administration" drive? While a senator in the Illinois state legislature President Obama drove a Chrysler 300C, when he was elected to the US Senate he traded it for a Ford Escape Hybrid. Secretary of State Clinton own a Mercury Mariner Hybrid, her husband former president Clinton still has his 1967 Ford Mustang Convertible.

"Current administration" may not have been the most correct statement, but I think maybe he was referring to the Auto Task Force. And as far as a proof source:
