German plant loses bid for Saab 9-3

Production of the Saab 9-3 will remain in Sweden, a General Motors Europe spokesman said today.

Media reports had suggested that production of the next-generation 9-3 would move to GM Europe's Opel plant in Ruesselsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, from Saab's Trollhattan, Sweden, factory.

To compensate for not getting the 9-3, GM Europe will add production of the Saab 9-5 and a compact car at Ruesselsheim.

Don't want to extrapolate too much but this meshes with the report that the 9-3 will be on Delta 2. This probably means that the 9-1 is go and will be built along the 9-3 at Trollhattan.

More fuel for discussion from Motor Authority with a slightly different take on production:

Motor Authority Article

GM has confirmed today that its next-generation Saab 9-3 will be produced at the carmaker’s Trollhattan plant in Sweden, leaving the Ruesselsheim plant in Germany free to produce the next Saab 9-5 and a brand new compact car likely to be based on the 9-X BioHybrid concept revealed at March’s Geneva Motor Show.

Well, what does that mean about the 9-2. I have heard rumors that there is going to be a 9-3 sedan and combi with the 9-2 being a smaller form of the 9-3 as a hatch. It would make sense to build both in Trollhattan but the above comment by mechgmguy makes me wonder. It would be nice if the existence of the 9-2 is valid.

edit: the 9-2 being different then the 9-1

www.automotorsport.se has floated some rumours of the NG 9-3 being (a) moved to DeltaII instead of EpII and (b) Being built in Rüsselheim alongside the NG Astra. Rumour has it Trollhättan would get the NG 9-3 cabrio and possibly hybrid versions of DeltaII.

What I don't know is if Rüsselheim produces Astras. The part about the 9-3 not being on EpII makes sense.

ok,

with the decision to build the next 9-3 (2012) on delta2 the production
will go to Trollhattan. (will be -> Delta2 only Production Plant)

Rüsselsheim will get the Insignia (2008) and the 9-5 (2009) Production (Epsilon2)
Instead of the promised 9-3 Production Rüsselsheim will get the
new Delta2 based Astra (2010).
The plant will be improved to build Delta2 and Epsilon2 cars.
