American cars are designed for American roads and American buyers. Europeans demand more fuel efficient cars and higher quality (especially in the interiors). Japanese buyers expect technology and small size for their limited parking and tax laws. American cars are big (relatively speaking), relatively low quality (keeping the prices relatively low), and with relatively high levels of equipment.

There are many cars from Japan and Europe that wouldn't do well in the US...just as many US-market vehicles wouldn't do well in those regions.

Chinese buyers (as well as buyers in most developing economies) need CHEAP transportation, since they make very little money. In China, getting a bicycle is a big deal.
