DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is mulling its options on how to make enough small cars to meet customer demand. Those options include adding more shifts or speeding up production lines.

It’s a good problem for the No. 2 U.S. automaker as it prepares for major cutbacks in truck production. Driven by a doubling in U.S. gasoline prices over the last few years, pickup truck and SUV sales fell by 11.1 percent during the first four months of this year compared with the same period a year ago. Truck sales will fall even more in May.

But sales of the Ford Focus in May will come in at more than 30,000, said Joe Hinrichs, Ford group vice president of global manufacturing. Ford sold about 24,000 of the small cars in April.

The problem: Ford’s Focus assembly plant in Wayne, Mich., has capacity of about 230,000 vehicles annually. If market demand for the Focus keeps up,
Hinrichs on Friday gave a group of reporters the early glimpse of Ford’s sales figures for the month of May from the Wayne plant in suburban Detroit. He wouldn’t say whether Ford would add a third shift at the plant, or if any of Ford’s five plants that are cutting back on production of SUVs and trucks might be converted for car production.

“The market’s moving so fast in the last couple months that everyone’s hesitant to make any declaration of any sort,” Hinrichs said. “Two months ago, we didn’t think that truck sales would be where they are today. They declined at a rate that’s far faster than we expected.”

Ford’s truck sales fell 18.2 percent in May.

Hinrichs remarks come a week after Ford CEO Alan Mulally said meeting the shift of consumer demand away from trucks and SUVs and toward small cars and crossovers is a challenge affecting the entire industry. Mulally said the tipping point was $3.50-per-gallon gasoline. Prices now have topped $4 in some markets.

“If the market changes in a dramatic fashion -- and it is -- we have to continue to re-evaluate and look at what our options are,” Hinrichs said.
Ford didn’t prioritize cars as much as it should have. But Ford will move as fast as it can, he said. The other challenge will be predicting where demand for trucks and SUVs will shake out.

“You have to be very careful, because there’s a fine line between having one too few and one too many” plants producing a vehicle, Hinrichs said. “That’s the art and science of what we do.”

Same name, new face, great options people want, competitive price. And it sells. This to me is proof that the Cobalt should have gotten a noticeable facelift along with the great XFE powertrain. Everyone knows that the Focus is noew and is checking it out (and buying it). It's catching the eye in a way that the Cobalt can't, no matter how efficient it is. It still looks the same.

Over 30,000 sold in May?

The Focus is now within striking distance of the Corolla and Civic, and may have passed them.

Nice to see a little credit given for this out of the park home run by Ford.

Hey, I was one that lauged at this car when I first saw the pictures. I really didn't think that it was what people wanted. But I can admit that I was wrong. It happens. Good for Ford... they really nailed the Focus... it was the right car at the right time.

Well, right car is a relative term.:) I mean, Ford sold 400,000+ Tempos in 1984. The Tempo is not exactly the pinnacle of compact sedans. I think everybody needs to keep this in mind: Great sales does not equal great car. A mediocre car can sell just because it is new and trendy, cheap, and/or full of features. Often, a vehicle's mediocrity will catch up to it.

The only real problem I can see with the Focus is it's questionable attractiveness. And apparently even that isn't enough to stop people from buying it. The Focus is a better car than the Tempo (with respect to their competitors then and now), no question, so I think Ford really deserves credit for the current Focus.

Convert Michigan Truck. Its right across the road. Engineers could just go right across the road for a model when converting MTA. All thats made there now in the Expy/Nav= send them to Kansas City with the F-150. Perfect solution!

I have a question, with the Mexican market F-150 stopping production to make way for the Fiesta, who is picking up its slack, Americas or the plant in Vensiqula.

The Focus was a smart move. Build a small car that's good on gas and give it a lot of headroom. The people stepping down from big cars and SUVs won't feel like they're giving up much. The Cobalt has little headroom. It's like most of the designs I see here. People think chopping off the top or giving it a rakish design looks cool but no one wants a car that makes them feel like they're in a bathtub.

actually apparently that is planned - that at least some units will come down the MTP side of the road.

I think this ia a big one. I'm repeating myself... but the Cobalt XFE so deserved a new nose and tail. That's all it would have taken, with maybe a tiny interior tweak. It needed the new Chevy nose. I know they're different groups, but GM should have stuck the Aveo sedan nose on the Aveo5 5-door and used the money redesigning the Aveo5 to putting a new schnoze on the Cobalt. The poor Cobalt needed to be visually differentiated from the current one to get noticed... the XFE drivetrain isn't going to get the recognition it needs buried in the same old Cobalt we've seen for several years now.

Ford was smart enough to see that, and they're reaping the rewards.

My wife loves her focus. She has put over 65k trouble free miles on it and enjoys its ride, room, and performance too. I really need an economy car to drive to and fro most of the time since 10mpg is a little out of reach with the Rumble Bee. I really like the focus of Katherine's and after hearing this, I am more motivated then ever to buy from Ford. Way to go Ford, finally somebody can make a car to compete against the imports.

Why can't GM get the Cobalts to sale like this? And why dosent Dodge...well, make a compact coupe, sedan?
