Ford begins production of new mid-range six-speed automatic

For 2009, the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner (as well as the Mazda Tribute) are getting the powertrain updates that they missed out on when their exteriors were revamped last year. While the 2008 models had all-new looks and interiors, the engines and transmissions were carried over from 2007, including the four-speed automatic transmissions. We'll have more info on their new 2.5L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 engines after we drive them next week, but Ford released some information on their new six-speed transmissions when we visited its Van **** Transmission Plant in Sterling Heights, MI.

The new 6F35 is a completely new six-speed automatic that will have a wider total ratio spread than the four speed it is replacing. The top gear ratio will be approximately the same as the four-speed, but the lower gears will be shorter helping off-the-line acceleration. The final drive ratio will be a little taller (numerically lower), which will help reduce the engine speed when cruising on the highway. Even with the larger first to sixth spread, the overall gap between each ratio will be smaller resulting in less engine speed drop during shifts and a quieter, smoother overall driving experience. The 6F35 uses a total of three planetary gear sets and five clutches to generate the six forward and one reverse gear.

Ford is claiming that the new transmission contributes to a 4-6% improvement in fuel efficiency depending on with which vehicle and engine it's paired. Besides the three CUVs launching shortly, the new gearboxes are also going into the revamped Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan early next year. The Van **** plant also builds the larger 6F50 used in the Edge, Taurus and their derivatives, as well as a smaller four-speed used in the Focus. That four-speed will also be replaced by a third smaller 6-speed in the next year or two for the Focus and Fiesta. Ford plans to double production of six-speed autoboxes by the end of 2009 to 1.4 million units and by 2012 expects 98% of all its automatics to be 6-ratio variants.

^I think that the current focus will keep the 4 speed until the new Focus arrives by late next year or spring 2010

Heres hoping it gets into the Focus next year. Igor we need your experties.

The article mentioned that the Focus and Fiesta will get a new version in the next year or two. I would guess that Ford is preparing those, not the current Focus. Why bother for one year as it is getting replaced.

how did you miss the info on the up dated engines?

The 6F35 will be mated to a new 2.5L I-4 engine and a power-improved 3.0L V-6 in the 2009 Escape and Mariner. The engine offers horsepower increases of 17hp for the I-4 and by 40hp for the V-6, while also boosting fuel economy by 1 mpg when mated to the new six-speed transmission. The 2009 Mazda Tribute also will feature the 6F35, as will two other vehicles early next year.

I wish the Domestics would just skip over the traditional automatics and go with a DSG type of gearbox. The 6 speed auto is a nice improvement but you only get a 4-6% improvement over the 4 speed auto. The DSG gets an additional 4-6% improvement because it gets rid of the torque converter. If they would have gone with the DSG at the same time they were upgrading to the 6 speed it would have been a much bigger improvement and more development dollars wouldn't be needed down the road for the inevitable DSG.

No wait, the Fusion (V6) and AWD, Taurus and Taurus X FWD and AWD, and the Edge FWD/AWD, and now the Escape
you forgot the Sable and the MKS and Flex will use it too, but Im wondering what things they did to this tranny so it can handle the TT torque since I remember that Ford said that the tranny could handle about 300hp and 280 ft·lbf

2009 F150 - 6speed optional on all engines and all trims
2010 Fusion.Milan - 6speed optional on both engines
2010 Mustang - 6 speed optional on both engines
2010 Focus - 6speed optional on all trims.
2009 or 2010 Super Duty

Basically after the 2010 Focus gets released in the summer of 2009, the only vehicles in Ford's lineup without optional 6speed automatic will be: Ranger and Crown Vic.

Sooooo, Ford is ahead of GM in transmissions?
Well maybe not if GM get a DSG into production first, or even something over 6 speeds, but yes for now and awhile Ford will be ahead of the domestics and the japanese.

Also to another post, the Crown Vic will be totally outta production at the end of this year? I believe, so Ford will really have a 6 speed standard or avalible on every vehicle form Sub Compact Fiesta to F-450 SD.

*Also i intended to just post Ford models, copy Meercurys dont apply as the Milan and Sable are the same car.

Finally, Igor do you know if Ford has to use another transmission on Ecoboost vehicles if the reg. 6F cant handle over 300HP and 280 torque, as these engines can produce 340+ HP?

Also a 6 Speed for Honda is non-existant, the new Pilot was supposed to have one, but i guess they will rely on its drop dead stunning looks and 250HP engine to lure buyers

All Lexus' have 6 speeds, but Toyota only puts them into V6 Camry, Avalon, Tundra, Sequioa, and the Venza so far.
