whee. this is what, the 3rd or 4th go round on "manufacturer is dropping am radio".

Maybe we could just merge all the threads, so everyone doesn't have to post the exact same thing...

The station I listen to the most is the car is an AM station, they have no FM option.

We all tend to say things are a 'deal breaker' for us when we don't like sometihng, but THIS actually is that for me. As long as there are other choices that have an AM radio option, this would be one single thing to make me not buy a vehicle.

One of my favorite stations is an AM Sports talk show station.

No Fords for me!

^Can't you stream them through your phone and play in your vehicle?
We had a similar thread a couple of months ago.

I'm still of the same opinion that AM radio is a basic, low-tech way to get in touch with the nation - I think they should keep it. Cell phones and networks are not basic, they are expensive and do not cover the nation and are more subject to going down/harder to get back up and running. People can get radios for their home, but once they are taken out of cars it could spell the end of AM radio.

But I bet the real driving force behind this is herding consumers to subscriptions. Take away AM and how far away is FM from going? Then take away Apple Car Play and the like and force you into paying the manufacturer to listen.

Ok, them iPad looking Dash's that have been appearing in vehicles as of late, have all the "Mirco Chip Electronics" needed for lowly old AM Radio. How much is "Ford" really saving?

Back in 2008, I messed up ordering 2 Focus. There was an "Entertainment Stick" option. A little stick, stabbed into the Steering Column, right side, low. right behind the steering wheel. This so called "Audio" option was $400. It looked clumsy and out of the way, and besides the Radio Stack was right there.

But this $400 option also gave you a Steering Wheel like this,
Vehicle Car Land vehicle Speedometer Trip computer

No Cruise Control!

So I investigated, found out that for $280, I could purchase a Factory Steering Wheel, with Cruise Control Buttons, .5 Labor to "Turn the Option On" for a total of $330, and I got a extra steering wheel.

My question is "How much did Ford save by not making Cruise Control Standard?"

I never used the radio on my car and I don't think anyone listens to AM anyways.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no...

-one station I listen to on occasion doesn't have a streaming option. The other one I listen to most of the time does, but streaming it isn't all that reliable (It seems to go down more than a handful of times each year)

-We are one of millions of people that live near the Canadian border and have access to Canadian radio stations. Probably the 2nd most listened to station for me is out of Canada, comes through crystal clear on AM radio in the car. But they block all streaming in the USA. If you are in the U.S....can't stream it.

-Finally, I'm one of those people, and I know there aren't a lot of us, but I am one of them that just doens't like to have my phone hooked up to my car all the time. The radio is for radio. In Dash is for navigation (not Android auto or car play through the head unit). The phone is for phone things. Unless there will be a full streaming option through the head unit without using my phone I'm not interested. And I know a lot of people don't feel that way, but from other conversations about this topic over the years, there are a lot that do feel that way also.

I just don't see a huge benefit to getting rid of AM radio in cars for the automakers.

On that I think you are WAY off.....Even today the vast majority of people that listen to talk radio/political talk radio and sports radio shows....its done through AM radio. Sure, SOME of those broadcast on FM also, but the vast majority is still on AM.

Does Saudi Arabia have many AM radio stations?

I could see this making sense if AM radio broadcasts were going away but they aren’t so why are automakers doing this? Wasn’t BMW the latest before Ford to announce they were doing away with AM in their cars? This is silly. It’s not like CD or tape players in cars. Might as well piss everyone off and do away with the radio function altogether.

How much can this possibly save the manufacturer? I don't see the upside. I can imagine a lot of drivers cursing under their breath after realizing,

"Hey wait.. There's no damn radio in this car !! Seriously, what the... WT actual F?" Are you KIDDING ME ??

Talk radio and sports, local news and weather. Yes, those are for the peasants. Off with their heads!

Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. Talk about out of touch. :geek:
