Ford begins testing 5.0L V8 for use in the 2010 Mustang [Spied]

Spy photographers have spotted a mule for the upcoming 2010 Ford Mustang testing on the roads of Michigan. While the mule looks unassuming thanks to its current-generation Mustang body, the real news is what lies beneath the pony car's hood — an all-new V8.

The two Mustang mules spotted are actually test beds for the 2010's all-new 5.0L V8. The details giving the new powerplant away are subtle — the only significant visual cue is the car's exhaust setup — but our sources confirm that the Blue Oval has indeed begun testing the new engine.

The mules also appear to have the 2010 Mustang's interior, although under heavy camouflage.

While Ford has yet to make an official announcement, it is believed that the 5.0L unit will replace the 4.6L V8 currently used in the Mustang.

The new engine is being developed under the codename 'Coyote' and will kick out 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Despite the 100 horsepower boost over the current Mustang GT, the new engine will return better fuel mileage than the 4.6L powerplant.

The new 5-liter powerplant will be built at Ford’s Essex Engine Plant in Windsor, Ontario.

true enough ...

BUT

The 5.0l V8 PFI, TIVCT, DOHC - 400hp / 380ft/lbs is for the GT - not GT500/Shelby/Cobra/Boss - just RUN OF THE MILL Mustang GT. So competition to the Challenger R/T and Camaro LTZ (or whatever it is to be called)

the next step up will be Direct injected 5.0l with a little more punch and efficiency (probably BOSS Mustang). Othe , more powerful engines are lined up for special editions like Cobra, etc.

Just as importantly, or more importantly, the Mustang GT is $26,000. The Camaro V8 or Challenger R/T might offer more power, but I will be astonished if they can come near the Mustang GT's price (even if it goes up a little for the redesign).

Ford really developed a “real 5.0” engine and not just another “4.9 engine” and call it a “5.0”?

For some reason, I kept hearing this popular hips song in my head.

CHORUS
Ice ice baby vanillla (x4)

Now that the party is jumping
With the bass kicked in and the vegas are pumpin'
Quick to the point to the point no faking
I'm cooking MC's like a pound of bacon
Burning them if you ain't quick and nimble
I go crazy when I hear a cymbal
And a hi-hat with a souped up tempo
I'm on a roll and it's time to go solo
Rollin' in my 5.0
With my rag-top down so my hair can blow
The girlies on standby waving just to say hi
Did you stop no I just drove by
Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I busted a left and I'm heading to the next block
The block was dead
Yo so I continued to A1A Beachfront Avenue
Girls were hot wearing less than bikinis
Rockman lovers driving Lamborghinis
Jealous 'cause I'm out getting mine
Shay with a guage and Vanilla with a nine
Reading for the chumps on the wall
The chumps acting ill because they're so full of eight balls
Gunshots rang out like a bell
I grabbed my nine all I heard were shells
Falling on the concrete real fast
Jumped in my car slammed on the gas
Bumpet to bumper the avenue's packed
I'm trying to get away before the jackers jack
Police on the scene you know what I mean
They passed me up confronted all the dope fiends
If there was a problem yo I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

REPEAT CHORUS”

I think that the SS and SRT will need to be preoccupied because this might be the base engine at 400hp, when the TT DI comes inline it will be at 500 hp or more and thats the true competition for the SRT and SS unless Ford decides to use the 6.2 as the top of the line engine

That doesn't matter. I don't think that people are cross-shopping the three cars, are they? These aren't bland, 4-door family haulers. I want a Camaro, I don't want a Mustang or a Challenger. It's that simple.

I am glad that the 5.0L is back, and I'm glad that it's getting some serious power. As far as I'm concerned, Camaro fans win here too, because it raises the bar. Mustang is an icon, it deserves some new blood. Now, ship a few of those engines to Holley, Edelbrock, Comp Cams, etc. so they can get cracking on some even cooler parts for them.

Good point. The 5.0L GT model would be up against lets say an RS Camaro. But putting a supercharger and maybe DI in a Camaro SS would be more then enough to challenge or most likely blow away a GT500

dont forget.. i think Chevy has more options then Ford when it comes to engines... Chevy could always put maybe a supercharged Z06 engine in the Camaro if needed.

400 hp and 400 lb/ft out of 5.0 L is very impressive and in the 3800 lb Mustang it could make for sure great runs between the Camaro if it gets the LS3 (as rumored). The Challenger R/T will need a big diet or way bigger Torque to get it done, the SRT 8 will be in the running at 4000 lbs and 425 hp.

Dodge could also do something tricky such as adding a supercharger or DI to the SRT8 Challenger.

could be Duspinnst has stated in another thread that the folks over at SRT have something planned for the SRT challenger. And knowing SRT's track record with there past models expect them to squeeze even more performance out of it somehow.

They are going to have to! Chevy and Ford have tons of power on hand.

But I imagine some people would cross shop them. The muscle car segment has always been about style, power, and low price. That's why the Mustang V6 sells so well. It's fast enough, it looks good, and it's extremely cheap for what you get.

I'm sure many of the Mustang V6 buyers past and present would rather take a Camaro V8, if they could afford it. But a lot of them can't.

I must disagree.. the V6 Mustang looks like crap.

Challeger R/T makes 375 or 380 with the Manual. The Camaro will make 400ish with the LS3 as the "base" V8. So 400 HP puts the Mustang GT right in the same ballpark as the other guys.

Now the GT500 needs to be more than 500, because the 6.4L Hemi Challenger (2010) and the LS8 Camaro both will be.

There is also the 6.4L Hemi for 2010 that will bow in all SRT8 models.

I would definately cross-shop them. I think if your looking for a super fun to drive, performance for the dollar car and don't have a brand bias all 3 of these would fit the bill.
