  • The group of 28 cross-industry companies have written to EU lawmakers
  • They've called for a 2035 target for the sale of only new zero-emission vehicles
  • Appealed for mandatory targets for charging infrastructure across nations
  • Ford and Volvo are the only car manufacturers that are part of the coalition
  • Both have independently committed to selling only electric cars from 2030

Car makers call for ban on petrol and diesel: Ford and Volvo have both joined a cross-industry coalition that's lobbying the EU to put in place laws that will only allow for the sale of zero-emission models from 2035

Car makers Ford and Volvo have joined a campaign group of 28 companies that is lobbying the European Union to rubberstamp a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2035.

The cross-industry coalition - which also includes Tesco, Uber and Unilever - is calling on the EU to ensure all new cars in Europe are zero-emission from the middle of next decade.

This would put the EU in-line with the UK, which has already outlined its schedule for the transition to electric vehicles by banning the sale of new petrol and diesels from 2030 and hybrids from 2035.

Both manufacturers have independently committed to stop selling new petrol and diesel cars in Europe from 2030 but a law introduced by the EU would mean that other brands would need to follow suit within five years.

The Climate Group says the last fossil fuel powered car needs to be off the road by 2050 in order for Europe to achieve its net zero emissions target.

To do so the group says the new petrol and diesel cars and vans need to be removed from showrooms from 2035 at the very latest.

Ford and Volvo, which together sold around 800,000 cars in Europe last year, appealed to EU lawmakers in a letter signed with the 26 other companies across a wide range of industries.

As well as appealing for a strict deadline for the ban on sales of all but new electric cars, the group is also calling for the EU to establish mandatory charging infrastructure targets.

Stuart Rowley, Chair of Ford Europe, said: 'At Ford in Europe, we believe that freedom of movement goes hand-in-hand with caring for our planet and each other.

'That’s why we are targeting all Ford vehicles to be zero emission by 2035 in line with this call, the COP26 RouteZero initiative and with our Paris Climate commitment.

'To successfully achieve this, EU policymakers must also establish mandatory national targets for a seamless electric charging infrastructure that lives up to the growing demand for electric vehicles, and will empower European consumers and businesses to take full advantage of living in a digital world.'

Ford has independently committed to stop selling new petrol and diesel cars in Europe from 2030 but an EU law would mean other brands need to follow suit within five years

In the UK, battery vehicles currently account for more than one in 10 (14.4 per cent) passenger car registrations, based on data for the first four months of 2022.

Across Europe, they make up around 10 per cent of all sales, according to green think tank, Transport & Environment.
While EV demand is growing and sales of petrol and diesel cars is slowing, campaigners say this shift needs to accelerate in order to improve air quality and peoples' health, it says.

The groups adds that cars and vans are responsible for 15 per cent of all CO2 emissions and are also the single largest source of nitrogen dioxide pollution, which the European Environment Agency estimates causes over 40,000 premature deaths in Europe every year.

It adds that combustion engine cars are also responsible for about a third of all oil imports into Europe and by transitioning to electric vehicles would 'enhance the continent’s energy security' and 'cut the billions of euros it sends abroad for oil every year'.

Volvo has already announced that 50% of its global sales should be fully-electric cars by 2025 before it stops selling petrol and diesel models entirely in 2030

In the UK, battery vehicles currently account for 14.4% of passenger car registrations, based on data for 2022 so far. Across Europe, they make up around 10% of all sales, says T&E

Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, added: 'Volvo Cars plans to become a fully electric car company by 2030 and supports the end of fossil fuel vehicle sales in Europe by 2035.

'This would not only be in-line with the goals of the Paris Agreement, which require 100 per cent zero tailpipe emission vehicle sales in Europe by 2035, but it’s just the right thing to do.

'The window for us to avoid the worst impacts of global warming is rapidly closing.
'At this critical moment, now is the time for the EU to reaffirm its leadership in climate action.'
The European Parliament and EU governments will decide their positions on the 2035 zero-emissions vehicles target in June.

Following negotiations, the final law is expected to be adopted in autumn.

In the aspect of being freed from OPEC it might be good, but there are still ongoing issues as to the practicality and such of these EV's because infrastructure is still not up to par. They are at the current time going with the lesser of two evils I feel.

So where is all this magical greenergy for charging these magic cars goiing to come from? Windmills? Solar? RELIABLE energy production is a number one necessity for modern civilization. Nat gas is clean. Nuke is clean. Coal is cleaner than having no electricity, no heat, no AC, no nothing.
That this whole movement is based on the most massive fraud committed in human history, globaloney warming, is folly on top of foolishness. We will see what unforeseeable bumps in the road develop as this magical nirvana develops.

This is Central Planning at its finest. It works every time it's tried! o_O What do entrepreneurs and businesses know about anything?

I will make a krazee prediction: Some other civilization-threatening emergency will develop after lektriks are embedded, an emergency so dire that it will require further input and diktats from the genius class of lifer bureaucrat never-created-anything-but-rules central planners.

Car makers call for ban on petrol and diesel: Ford and Volvo have both joined a cross-industry coalition that's lobbying the EU to put in place laws that will only allow for the sale of zero-emission models from 2035

When they say "zero-emission" do they mean in-total or are they only looking at the non-existent tailpipe?

I have a feeling that most road users in Europe want this to happen and know that this is good for their part of the world as it frees them from the chains of OPEC.
So it's a case of "The Devil you know, vs. the devil you don't"? Being an over-producer and net exporter, would be an option too, no?

As if OPEC is the only evil in the world, as if there won't be other "winners and losers" or you won't be at the mercy of some other monolith? Are you preparing to satisfy all of your needs for being in your own backyard?

And what does Ford of Europe's bigwig recommend? Delegate even more power and control to EU central planners, of course!

Yeah, wait until the monolith OPEC is replaced with an Electricity Monolith or some system to that extent. I believe it is coming.

Only problem is JDP nobody has really been investing much nuclear power apart from France, most of the big 12 nuclear power stations in the UK will all be decommissioned closed shut down pretty soon, with just possibly 2 new plants planned for the future.

New gas central heating boilers will be banned in 2023 in the UK, new electric heating using heat pumps will become the norm, the costs of installing an air source heat pump can vary from £8,000 to £18,000, while ground source heat pump costs can range anywhere from £20,000 to £35,000.

LPG autogas used in cars will be phased out by 2024 the last big supplier MFG are going to stop supplying the UK, and have started to phase LPG autogas out this year.

UK looks like they will rely heavily on wind farms in the future just like Germany, backed up by solar panels and hydro-electric power, going for 100% renewables.

Being so heavy reliant on wind power will cause problems when the wind drops does not deliver electric power the consumer then pays for the electric power three times. Wind farms get paid the same money by the British Government whether the deliver or don't deliver electric power the British taxpayers foot the bill, when they don't delver the the energy supplier looks elsewhere, have ended up using very expensive expensive gas power stations to supply electric power, because the consumer is on fixed contracts most of the energy suppliers went bust as they could not afford to absorb the huge losses, our energy supplier Bulb that uses 100% renewables mostly wind power went bust, because they used a lot of wind power the British Government bailed them out with £2 billion bailout once again paid for by the British taxpayer.

Chinese are the electric equivalent of OPEC they very much process all the raw materials that go into electric cars also own a lot of the big rare earth materials within China, have been buying up most of the mine around the planet as well. If geo political problem like Russia/Ukraine blows up in China the electric car will be totally buggered sad to say.

Germany No1 fuel used in the the generation of electric power is coal at the moment, that's not very clean, they are still buying cheap gas & oil from the Russians till the end of the year, UK sanctions are have supposed to have kicked in but some two big UK supermarkets Tesco & Sainsbury's are profiteering still buying cheap blood stained petrol from the Russians ripping of British consumers charging the same prices as others who are sourcing oil from the Saudi's.

OPEC are certainly milking the Ukraine/Russian situation for all it's worth, not turning on the tap a little bit more, your right JPD. Whatever way you look at it Europe is buggered, only saving grace is the protectionism that will kick in around 2030, an EV car content not made in Europe will be heavily taxed off of the roads of Europe, so the Chinese & South Korean companies are setting up shop in Europe at the moment, Chinese can still trump all that because they process all raw materials that go electric cars.

Wonder what would happen to the electric car if similar Ukraine/Russia geo-political war between South Korea/China broke out, with China processing al the raw materials that go into EV's, with Chinese CATL & South Korean LG Chem companies both involved in a war?

Chip shortage/covid car factory lockdowns days will become the golden era for mass producing cars in recent times.

I wish I could say I find it amazing that after two awful world wars in Europe, these people seem intent on setting themselves up for WWIII which they are ill prepared for. Uncle Sugar, with good intentions we presume, has made the Euros a bunch of codependents who would find themselves in deep doodoo should Uncle get preoccupied in Asia. We should also recognize Taiwan, thank you Jimmuh Cotter you little worm.

Totally dependent on their NATO sworn enemy for energy needs? I keep asking myself, how is it possible to be this stupid? And it looks like Formerly Great Britain is setting up its hapless citizens for a nasty fall down several staircases. How is it possible to be so stupid? Oh, I already asked that. Sorry.

UK State pension is one of lowest in Europe has been for decades, £189 a week the British pensioners make up a sizeable proportion of the UK population were see German & Spanish State pensioners getting £500+ a week pensions voted out of the EU they were not getting all the good bits like a decent State pension, Gas/electricity bills are averaging about £400 a month with another big jump in energy price rises coming at the end of the year, your right the system is set to fail in 2035, everybody can see it coming except the British Government.

Food, clothing, eating dining out, beer price in pubs the prices have gone through the roof because British government give the low paid a massive unearned pay rise by upping the minimum pay by law, so private service sector companies picked up the bills, they typically just past the bill on to consumer that fed into 9% inflation, the low paid ended up gaining absolutely nothing as all the prices went though the roof in shops, as they passed on the minimum pay rise to the low paid consumers.

Yes Boris our resident clown thinks he is some kind Churchill, he is setting the UK for a war with Russia by constantly gobbing it off to madman Putin setting the UK up as prime target the next country Putin will pick-on. In WW2 the UK had the capability to bash out 10,000 Wellington bombers and 1,000's of Spitifires etc, sadly today British Aerospace is sub-assembly wing maker for Airbus about as good as it gets, you would be lucky to get 10 Euro fighters made in 10 years at the plant that make wings. Boris has no idea on what UK military manufacturing capabilities are today will be shocked when he finds out we are pretty no good at producing anything anymore Westminster are really stupid and out of touch just move from one disaster to the next one, UK use to have 28 airframe makers more than the US had, and 7 aero engine makers, they have all gone. Rolls Royce aero engine are the only jewel in the crown that left, doubt if most of those elected in Westminster could name any of the companies, most of the UK RAF bases/UK factories are now museums, new housing estates or industrial parks.

Traditionally Ford cars were very affordable loved purchased by both elderly pensioner and the low paid workers in the past, personally l can't see them being to afford the Ford Focus EV that morphed into Mustang Mach E during conception mid-design stage that costs a staggering £43,895 for a base entry model, Ford are alienating all its traditional buyers will be in for a big electric shock come 2030 when it's car sales are heading for zero in the UK.
Ford's Transit EV will be the only model that will do well make a tidy profit in Europe after 2030, companies in Europe will have the money to splash, their employees will be skint that's the way it's heading. Fords used to be affordable, come 2030 they will become totally unaffordable, Ford will be in for an electric shock in Europe sale "car" sales will plummet in Europe they don't make 'cars' that are desirable anymore,

Ford UK is Ford's biggest market in Europe, l really can see Ford's car range disappearing like it has in the US, Ford's commercial vehicles like the Transit will survive, l really cannot understand why Ford are so keen to rush into EV's other than the EU C02 based fines on ICE vehicles are crippling them, nobody is buying their Fiesta & Focus's anymore, and Tesla have eaten all their market at Hertz. Ford made some really great car from the late 1960's to mid 1980's in the UK nearly every car on the road was a Ford, sadly that has been slowly eroding German/French brands seem to rule the roost, the Transit is still King very much keeps Ford alive. if Ford had to rely on the profits on it's small dull cars of it would have been a gonna ages ago. Sadly 2/3rds of the UK manufacturing base disappeared during the Thatcher/Blar years that helps to pay for a decent public services for governments. UK Government now employs over 51% of the British workforce the mostly low paid private sector that has to pay for it is creaking at the seams floating on Fiat printed money/high taxation.

Hopefully going to retire soon, going to downsize to a cheaper area buy a nice semi rural home, with enough land to grow my own food and become more self sufficient, avoid paying as much UK Government tax as possible, heath & happiness friend & family will come first, probably going to watch London & Westminster get burned to the ground from afar as the mass starve & freeze to death in the Winter all obviously part of the global warmery weather tax hike hoax.

Agree with your sentiment on the UK Neanderthal, no need to say sorry, most British people can see know what's coming down the track it won't be buying $54,750 Ford Focus EV's base entry models sorry Ford Mach-E with pony badge & Stang rear light cluster to justify the price of a boring dull ole Focus after 2030 LOL.

Lot's of rules regarding EV's are being phased in gradually that l can see affecting the sales that even Ford seem unsure of, heavy foreign "contents" taxes will cripple the sales of cars like the Mexican made Mustang Mach E after 2030.

Ford of Europe have not made an announcement yet on a Ranger EV future arrival date, or if it coming to Europe yet have got a feeling it will be assembled at a VW plant somewhere within Europe to escape heavy foreign made content taxes using a European based battery supplier as batteries make up a large amount EU foreign content, as the EU don't want the Chinese flooding Europe out with cheap affordable cars from China in the future killing off the local auto industry. Ford's Ranger weight is also bordering on being shifted into another tax category/driving licence category, adding heavy battery packs ‘Light Goods Vehicles’ include pick-up trucks, vans and some three-wheeled commercial vehicles. These vehicles are usually able to be driven on a standard car licence otherwise known as Category B.

Ford's F Series Lightning EV weighs more than 35 percent more than the gas-powered model, so l am expecting a Ranger EV to be heavier that means it will get shifted into a different driving licence category that will require drivers to take driving tests to be able to drive a new Ranger EV in the future. EU/UK pick-up regulations will kill off some Ranger EV sales regulations allow drivers with a regular category B licence to drive such a vehicle at the moment, rather, However, this doesn’t cover vehicles not being used to transport goods, does not allow for the towing of a trailer, the current Rangers weight sits 150kg below the next class up, adding heavy battery packs is bound to push it into a higher category mean you will no longer be able to drive a Ranger EV on a category B licence anymore that will kill off a lot EU Ranger EV sales

It's really sad to the sorry state Ford of Europe are in at the moment was hoping to see something like Bronco EV or Maverick pick-up EV arrive in Europe some time in the future something that has some personality & character for a change. Love Ford the brand to but don't like anything at all on offer in their shed other than the Transit EV promised for their post 2030 ICE death, new EV era, sadly knocked pan out over the last 45 years to only reward myself with van retirement present from Ford of Europe they are a joke, probably going to enough sitting in the bank to purchase pay cash for 10 new dull boring anodyne Mexican $54k Mach-E whose sales will start to plummet as foreign "content" staggered-in taxes get turned up to the max after 2030 by the EU., sadly there is not one single car in the Ford of Europe future EV dull boring anodyne car design shed, that appeals to me in the slightest way one little bit what-so ever, that's Ford of Europe's problem not mine.

Probably looking at Jeep Wrangler EV realistically as retirement present in the future, can't wait forever for Ford of Europe to deliver something nice special ever again for a change, if you enjoy dull boring bland anodyne Ford of Europe new EV "cars" then l am pleased for you, cant see Ford selling to many of them in the future, but the Transit EV profits will keep them ticking over, with constant declining car sales nobody wants. Would love a GMC/Chevy pick-up probably a Chevy LUV would be my perfect best retirement present, sadly being LHD would mean would retiring somewhere nice in the Mediterranean to drive it on the correct side of the road with the steering wheel close to the centre of the road, sadly that a bit to drastic thing to have to get a Chevy pick-up.

Probably

Sadly all our oil drilling platforms in the North Sea have been sold off to the Chinese, like most British companies have been sold off to Johnny Foreigner never supported by Westminster like GM were in 2009 in Chapter 11, Thatcher would have sold GM off to Toyota for a few bucks to get rid of the problem, so would have Blair 2/3rds of the British manufacturing base disappeared during those Governments.

Yes you are absolutely right about family, sadly Westminster is run by lawyers, NHS professionals, bankers generally like to be seen as do-gooders love spending loads taxpayers money on foreign aid whist leaving putting British poorest people last, they are letting British pensioners starve & freeze to death in the Winter, their plight gets ignored totally by the British Government State owned leftie BBC media (only one of the few things that has not been sold off) poor Brit's freezing/starving to death is ignored by the media its not newsworthy, global warming weather tax raising agenda is all that newsworthy.

British public certainly feel they got hoodwinked by lies at the last General Election they voted Tory got the leftie Green Party policy instead who got under 1% of the UK vote at the General Election, once elected Boris got into power he changed forgot why he got elected, hit the British public with a £1 trillion "green plan" that was never mentioned in their manifesto, the Tory vote just got smashed to bits a the mid term local elections for doing it . Westminster they don't give a hoot about the UK manufacturing base just want to bleed it dry with taxes to pay for the bloated British Government public sector, the chickens are starting to come home to roost 90,000 highly paid British Government pen pushing civil servants are going to get kicked out door at the moment as the hapless Westminster try to balance the books of the overspending UK Governments racked up debt mountain that is out of control.

The real issue is you do have a proper ruling class in the UK. Runs the Media and Government. It would be better if you had some executive power with the Monarch over the Tyranny you have. I look at Scotland, and it would seem every single thing they do over there is driven by disdain for the English. Its fighting 13th century disputes in the 21st century. What I do not understand is why on earth they vote the way they do!
