Falling Cruze sales set to cost manufacturing jobs

2143 Views 24 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  VS Ute 5Litre
Holden insiders have suggested a major production line cut and mass shedding of staff at the Elizabeth plant is imminent on the back of plunging sales of the Cruze model.

Workers have told News Corp Australia they have been warned they should be prepared to be "tapped on the shoulder" should the schedule of redundancies not be met voluntarily.

The Cruze models recorded their worst sales figures on record last month following a continued decline in sales in the second half of last year. The model has been given a small facelift but one of its variants has been dropped from production.

It is understood a meeting of workers was held last week to outline the road ahead for Holden, which will finish manufacturing in Adelaide's north by the end of 2017.

Workers have said up to 500 of 1600 jobs at Elizabeth are earmarked to go within the first quarter of this year.

"They will be taking voluntary redundancies first, then forced," a Holden insider said.

The "facelift" wont help matters they made the car look worse.

Those workers should have been making unique Zeta based V6 and V8 RWD/AWD SUVs for domestic and export consumption, but instead they are making the world's 19th best FWD 4 cylinder sedan and hatchbacks.

Watching Holden die is like a s l o w m o t i o n p l a n e s m a s h .
Nationalism seems to have lost favor with many people ...and unfortunately that costs jobs ...

The nationalism thing is pretty weak when it involves people choosing a 6 year old car originally from Korea produced by a corporation in America shutting down a local brand that used to mean something. Particularly if it can't crack the top 10 in its own class anymore.

So no, it doesn't cost jobs. ***** poor management lead by casual foreign blow-in Senior Managers making decisions not in the interest of locals does. GM owns Holden, so is allowed to kill it any which way it sees fit - but if car companies were children, Holden would have been in state care since 2005.

And these people would have jobs.

It is lack of imagination and strong competitive sense that GM continually fails to bring to the table . It gets clobbered by the competition , where is there the CRUZE 5 door hatch , an upscale sport model with a hot engine , tranny and handling package . Ford's Fiesta and Focus , for one offer this to buyers , the hot sport model attracts the younger buyers , they cover the whole spectrum of buyers . GM is the fuddy duddy of the auto manufacturers , where only the Cadillac , the big profit boys , rates for more creative designs . This isn't what I remember of bygone years where Chevy lead the country with its products . Now , it seems to be that Chevrolet is mostly confused and without strong cohesive leadership. How many tries have they made with one model , the Malibu ?? Totally unacceptable , how do you stride confidently into the future dragging one leg in a cast ?? kind of reminds me of the emporer's new clothes . The cowed , lower rated staff of GM , probably afraid to tell upper management that they are really just bare assed naked ,,,, in my opinion !!

the OZ market cruze had a 5 DR and a "WARM" 1.6T + an estate car version and IMHO got "clobbered" in the Vanilla car ranks of the Corolla / Mazda3 and the family SUV segments because they where TO FOCUSED on the Commodore and it's ever more NICHE status EX globally

the US/CDN market I agree GM has followed the play it safe track

Really? Cruze is nowhere near #5 in terms of technology and execution. Perhaps only second to Focus, Golf and Astra which are all newer.

Go drive it, before you declare it inferior. See for yourself what sort of car it really is.

Not only Driven one, had one in the family that lasted 18 months. Not a bad car, but not as liked as the car that replaced it - a Kia. It was chosen largely because it was a Holden like the car that came before, but off loaded on merit.

what it "really is" is a 7 year old car.

It's the same logic as trying to sell the same car (VE) for 6 years without changing it and expecting it to sell well

It needs more than poorly applied lipstick and DRL's on the front to sell it needs to be a brand new car by now

Holden had a blip when the redesigned the look of the front end and did a hell of a lot better job than this current (re fresh)

They also had another blip when they gave it a better engine in the 1.6T

But those revisions were two and 4 model years ago

Bring on the new car already this thing is ready for the old cars home

Assuming I was in the market for a "new" smallish 4 cyl hatch/small sedan, these are the cars I would prefer to spend my money on over a Cruze;
- Citroen C4
- Mazda 3
- Mazda 2
- Ford Fiesta
- Ford Focus
- Nissan Altima
- Skoda Fabia
- Fiat 500
- Subaru Impreza
- Kia Cerato
- Peugoet 208
- Peugoet 308
- Renault Clio
- Renault Megane
- VW Golf
- VW Polo
- Honda Civic
- Volvo V40
- Skoda Octavia
- Hyundai Elantra
- Kia ProCeedGT
- Audi A1
- Alfa Romeo Giulietta
- Hyundai i30

Line ball call vs.
- Toyota Corolla
- Merc A class ($$)
- Mini ($)
- Audi A3
- Alfa Romeo Mito

I would prefer to buy a Cruze instead of:

- Nissan Pulsar
- Chery J3
- Kia Soul
- Proton Suprima

The Cruze is already older than any of the above- it is not rational to think sinking sales are going to turn around without something new being brought to the table.

Oh, well, even though its the only one made over there by ausies?

This is sub par in its class? Really?

I have to say, you guys have really really high standards.

It's funny what happens when you are exposed to a lot of good product. Small hatches may be a foreign concept to the Yanks but they are a staple in Europe and Australia so manufacturers poor some R&D dollars into them. The Cruze is not that great anymore. Simple as that.

1: wagon is Pure Korean, but why expect people to buy the same car twice or three times when the world has moved on?
2: perhaps you should drive some of these cars and then still tell me they are sub Cruze standard
3: how are those European Cruze sales going then...

If 2015 facelift was better I'd still be looking at an SRi

But they just wrecked it

It's a total laughing stock now - maybe I can get a good deal on a 2014 for the missus she likes them apart from the sub 2.o litre engine

Always the answer to everything.
Always the answer to everything.
Where's GM's truly sporty turbo v6 and V8 SUVs? Porsche almost bought Volkswagen off the back of selling one variant. Over 10 years later GM still hasn't joined the lucrative party with any of its (diminishing number) of brands.

Nah, lets just be one of a number of factories building the exact same aging model car, in a market over saturated with other 4 cylinder FWD econoboxes that are virtually identical on paper, bought by people who have price as their number 1 or 2 most important criteria.
I'd buy a SRi even now, if that was the type of car I was looking for. The new nose is a turn off tho, so I'd be fishing in the 2014 pond.
