BRUSSELS (Reuters) -European Parliament lawmakers on Wednesday voted to support an effective EU ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, rejecting attempts to weaken the proposal to speed Europe's shift to electric vehicles.

The vote upholds a key pillar of the European Union's plans to cut net planet-warming emissions 55% by 2030, from 1990 levels - a target that requires faster emissions reductions from industry, energy and transport.

Lawmakers suported a proposal, made by the European Commission last year, to require a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2035, which would make it impossible to sell fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the EU from that date.

Attempts by some lawmakers to weaken the target to a 90% CO2 cut by 2035 were rejected.

The law is not yet final. Wednesday's vote confirms the parliament's position for upcoming negotiations with EU countries on the final law.

The aim is to speed Europe's shift to electric vehicles and embolden carmakers to invest heavily in electrification, aided by another EU law that will require countries to install millions of vehicle chargers.

"Purchasing and driving zero-emission cars will become cheaper for consumers," said Jan Huitema, parliament's lead negotiator on the policy.

Carmakers including Ford and Volvo have publicly supported the EU plan to stop combustion engine car sales by 2035, while others, including Volkswagen, aim to stop selling combustion engine cars in Europe by that date.

But emails seen by Reuters show industry groups including German auto association VDA lobbied lawmakers to reject the 2035 target, which they said penalised alternative low-carbon fuels and was too early to commit to, given the uncertain rollout of charging infrastructure.

"Our positions are transparent. It is our mission to develop the best solutions with everyone involved," a VDA spokesperson said.

Electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles made up 18% of new passenger cars sold in the EU last year, although overall car sales dropped in the year amid semiconductor shortages, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association.

Transport produces a quarter of Europe's planet-heating emissions, and greenhouse gases from the sector have increased in recent years, threatening efforts to avert dangerous levels of climate change.

They have no idea what they're getting into.

No worries. Der Fuhrer has his own private jet, no worries. Cheap jet fuel too. Yes we can!

Der Fuhrer Klaus Schwab is running that show
Why constantly bring up Nazism and der Fuhrer when discussing things like this? All it does is cloud the issue. It's no different than Leftists calling the Far-Right Nazis because they want to ban anything that isn't straight, white, male and Christian. Hyperbole is one thing, but stuff like that shuts down all intelligent conversation. Isn't there a way to say you disagree that doesn't make you sound like the very people you claim to despise? Aren't we above this crap?

Like I always say rushing to run off the cliff! They have no idea the unintended consequences or unintended environmental consequences by forcing this down folks throats.

Good luck Europe…

Come off it. The EU is merely reaffirming a decision that it made several years ago.
You clearly did not watch Der Fuhrer's annual address to the politburo

Führer is a German word meaning "leader" or "guide"

Who do you think that you are addressing?
Klaus is making his speech to party organs and setting the political policy agenda for the next year. This is totally in your face, and open for everyone to see it.
WEF is not even a treaty organization. Why does its leader address government and industry leaders like this, and just like that, they go and vote as he instructs them?

To get to your question
Who do you think that you are addressing?
Is that you Comey? How is life since you left the FBI?

Motorists have generally attacked these plan, probably France is the only country with the electric power infrastructure in place, gas central heating is also being banned with electric heat pumps replacing them that can cost up to $35,000 to install the rewards be will your electric bills will quadrupole to save us all from global warmery.

I don't think the elites plans are going down to well with motorists & consumers at the moment whose average gas/electric bills have jumped to mortgage $500 dollars a month because of the the Ukraine/Russian war, utility bills gas/electric bills are set to jump higher again later this year when several EU countries that include Germany the biggest consumer stops buying cheap Russian gas/oil, have vowed never to buy it from Putin ever again.

None of what the elite in power is doing planning is going to well in skint Europe, at the moment with the overtaxed motorists, the masses know they won't be able to afford expensive EV's in 2035 and have no desire to buy 5-7 year old second EV's with big 15k-25k plus battery pack replacements looming when they hit 8-10 years old.

‘This is madness!': Motorists attack EU for 2035 petrol and diesel car sales ban

DAILY EXPRESS 9/6/2022

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted to back proposals that would ban the sale of new cars with combustion engines in 2035. Voting in Strasbourg, France, a majority of lawmakers backed the proposals to require automakers to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 100 percent by the middle of next decade.

This would amount to a restriction on the sale of new cars powered by petrol or diesel.
Jan Huitema, a Dutch MEP for the Renew Europe Group, celebrated the passing of the bill that he introduced to Parliament.

Speaking yesterday, he said: "Great News! Today my report on CO2 standards for cars was adopted. Driving will be clean from 2035.

"By stimulating innovation by car manufacturers for more and cheaper electric cars, driving becomes more sustainable and affordable for everyone."

He called on more support for electric cars across the continent, specifically the creation of a second and third-hand EV market, saying that "electric cars should be for everybody".

Reacting to the news, hundreds of Express.co.uk readers questioned the plans to introduce such legislation.
One Express.co.uk commenter, under the nickname davecop62, said: "A kick in the teeth for the people of Europe and the UK.
"How can they enforce a ban when there is no affordable alternative.

Another user, Justathought, commented: "The Greens win, however, they have 13 years to ensure that all UK roads and situations have plenty of vehicle charging points.

"The EU bans petrol cars for no logical reason. You can be sure China and India will continue.
"This may make these people feel happy but it will make pretty well zero effect on global emissions."

Come 2035 this will all end in tears, can only hope these solid state batteries do finally make it into mass produced cars one day.

They cannot achieve “100%” reduction on CO2 vehicle emissions as long as a single already-existing IC vehicle is still operating.

In the US, thats 275 million vehicles! Even if 100% of 2023 vehicle production was zero-emission, it’s still only 5% of all operating vehicles.

5% equal 100%.

Their proposed banning of petroleum-fueled cars, is on the wrong side of the "spectrum".

If they truly wish to push the EV agenda, if they truly wish to avoid the dependence on foreign oil sources (like Russia) how about they announce some concrete plans to increase electricity production and availability, and reduce it's cost?

Their proposal is like trying to save lives in auto accidents by banning bleeding.

EV's are inevitable. They are the future, no matter what anyone thinks it's happening. We either develop the tech now, on our own or we WILL be buying it from China. Which would you rather have? America will be behind....AGAIN. Buying the future from someone else, AGAIN, all because we're stubborn and we have to politicize everything. Our freedom and capitalism will be the very rope that hangs us due to hubris and a lack of humility.

The historical context is He-who-shall-not-be-named, and I can't imagine that you weren't trying to reference that totalitarianism.
You are correct in the Totalitarian nature of the WEF and it’s current trajectory of driving political policy. It’s a proper classic Politburo modelled in the classic sense.
Answerable to no one but itself, and has no regard for National citizens priorities.

Watch the speech and see that the priorities outlined by Klaus are what the EU is pursuing.

At some point, this organisation is going to be declared hostile to the United States

I hate to tell you, but it's more than just ICE that create CO2. And if you desire zero CO2 production--a physical impossibility even with totalitarian bureaucrat assistance--nobody will be around to see the ice cinder that Muvver Earff has become.

Check Chyyynnnaaa's methods of power production. They like COAL! Imagine that! They and India and the Rooskies and all the world's Bad Guys don't give a tinker's damn about CO2. But they're happy to watch Western Civilization destroy itself.

And CO2 is good, not bad. And if you think "warming" is bad, try out cooling for size. But we're in the middle of an 800 year warming trend, thank God, and Life Is Good. Until and if the totalitarians gain more control.

This is a classic straw man argument. Nobody with the sense God gave red brick believes that you can eliminate CO2 production. The problem is that the Industrial Revolution brought on the creation of CO2 at rates too high for nature to compensate. As a result, atmospheric concentration of CO2 has skyrocketed.

Indeed. And the tired argument of - until we all do something, no one should do anything - is nothing more than the classic race to the bottom. Facile beyond belief

Always good to see these (ahem) internationally respected amateur-expert climatologists here on GMI 👍
