I had to have my truck inspected today. The inspection must be done annually, and I am celebrating 2 years with my truck this week. Anyhow, I went to pay for my inspection and was charged 11.10. I told the guy that it was wrong and he informed me that the county that I live in doesn't have any emissions test. All I had to get was a safety check!! I can't believe that there are still areas of this country that don't have it.

So my question to you- Who still doesn't have to get an emissions test?

We don't, but our safety inspection is very detailed, and costs $25. They check the exhaust over and fail it for nearly any reason at all. I think they should start emission testing though, there is nothing worse than getting stuck behind a car that sounds like a diesel, and smokes like a diesel...but isn't...:lmao:

Here in South Dakota there isn't an annual inspection or emissions test. All we gotta do is the annual renewal of the registration. A lot different than PA, where I'm from.

The entire state of Hawaii for one - we have a volcano that puts out more noxious fumes than several entire states. We do have a yearly safety test however.

None here either. I live outside the DFW metromess, and am not in a county that requires one.

I don't think we (eastern Nebraska) require any kind of inspection whatsoever......one would think modern engineering & technological advances would render inspections like that obsolete....

Most of the mid-western states don't have either.
In fact most of the West, except California, only have it in large metro areas.
IL has emissions tests in Chicago land and St. Louis area, and they still inspect apportioned trucks.
IA doesn't have it and doesn't need it.
AZ has smog checks in Phoenix and Tuscon metro.
CO has smog checks in Denver, unsure about CO. Springs.

Safety checks are a great way to get money and little else.

With modern technology being as advanced as it is, can someone inform the unenlightened me, why emissions tests are done in states other than CA??

Well the main issue is trying to make sure the cars are still running in good order. Typically the limits are several times higher than the maximums when the car was new (sometimes a few orders of magnitude)

On a modern car it is a lot harder to screw it up, since the system is kind of self-regulating. In the late 70's with all these vacuum lines and silly crazy sphagetti under the hood it would never work right even when you drove it off the dealer lot :D

$$$$$$$$$$

Pat Bedard (or possibly Csaba) at Car and Driver ha$ written $ome intere$ting article$ regarding emi$$ion$ te$t$.

Like traffic $camera$ (Bedard's term) and other satanic devices, they are a hidden tax and they often make conditions more dangerous rather than supporting their "safety" claims.

The technology has existed for some time regarding roadside emissions testers which can identify individual vehicles that are emitting noxious fumes. If lawmakers were earnestly interested in reducing smog emitters while best serving the interests of their employers (the taxpaying citizens, lest we forget), that is what they would do.

But it's much easier to create a blanket fee, and far more profitable. The business-government axis creating imaginative new taxation and punishment methods is a slippery slope we're going down fast.

FWIW, I often smell a vehicle ahead that's burning oil, shipping raw gas out the tailpipe (followed a 57 Chevy yesterday...wow, stinky!), or otherwise making things smelly/smoggy for the rest of us.
I am sure there are many folks with more sensitive olfactory systems who could function as rolling emissions testers to tag vehicles that make it stinky or smoggy.

So I guess it's kinda a good thing my dad's Impala SS (327--totaled), Torino GT and Galaxie 500 are now sewer pipe rather than rolling around somewhere..... hahaha

Arkansas, no annual test at all. All you have to do is pay to renew your tags every year. If you buy a car that was previously registered in another state, you have to have a state police officer verify the mileage and VIN, although I have no idea why. I have never had mileage reported on any of my titles.

I like to see them continue to be performed, as it keeps the clapped out pieces of junk from being put back on the roads. Let a municipality suspend emissions tests, and you'll see first had what I'm getting at within six months.
