i dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but the on the Scion XB, it has only one reverse light, and its on the left side. what is the point of it? is it supposed to be hip, a design flaw they ran with, or is there an unknown shortage of reverse lights? here a pic if no one else has seen:

Possible explanation:

They moved it to the bumper from next to the license plate to better accommodate US and foreign-size plates and/or to lighten the hatch, and they didn't want wires for the second light running too close to the exhaust.

It is not a design flaw. It's an attempt here to be "different" for the sake of being different. It doesn't hurt them that installing one light is cheaper than installing two. My Hijet has only one reverse light. It does it's job just fine. In this vehicle however, it's design was all about how cheaply and lightweight the vehicle could be built.

I've noticed on just about any non-US car, what we would have as two reverse lights, in EU for example, the one on the driver's side is white while the other is red. Same on many JDM cars.

Guess it's just trying to mimic the imorted car look.

The red light is a fog light. Basically a headlight with a red lense only used in extreme fog. It's operated via a special switch in the car. An attention getter when lit.

I guess Toyota decided that only the driver side needs to be illuminated when reversing. Looks odd, but fits the odd look of the car as a whole.

Many cars for many years have one rear reversing light and one rear fog lamp. If it illuminates the area behind the car...
The rear fog is intended to reduce multi-vehicle pile-ups in heavy fog conditions.

A good idear, I wouldn't mind having one or two in back.

Also handy for rallyeing in reverse.
