....and utter understanding of all things automotive, has seen you assigned to head your very own GM vehicle development program.

The only problem is, you only have $40. See price list below:
Note: there are 8 sections ranging from $1-$10 so you can spend $5 in each for a Camry. My definitions are a guide only, it's a simple scale. ie A small fast back could cost $3-4 dollars.

$40, you say? Here is what I think is the best way by far to use it.

A Body style
Compact $1

C Drive Train
4 speed M floor shift $1

D Exterior Design
Piece of cold toast $1

E Interior Design and materials

Total vehicle cost $7

I leave the company after that, letting them figure out how to market and sell my entry-level $7 brainchild.

I pocket the remaining $33 as part of my golden parachute. I retire and live happily ever after.

Since my mind's locked into the "funky family utility wagon" mode...

  • Size: Compact/C-segment $2
  • Body style: Wagon $1
  • Engine: 1400cc SOHC lump $1 (SOHC engines are actually better suited to urban driving patterns). How much should I add for Diesel?
  • Gearbox: 5spd auto $5 (keeps revs down in urban traffic)
  • Styling: Funky and distintive, but balanced, $5
  • Interior: not on your list. I want highest-quality plastics but make it rugged and snot-and-poo-proof for kids. $5
  • Gadgetry? Fast glass is a must-have. Single CD. I'll forego the rest. $2?
  • Handling: Safety over all other concerns, meaning a finely-tuned chassis. $7
  • Quality/Refinement: Rock Solid $8 (and this surprises anyone?)

36 bucks.

First reaction:

hmmm... you're equal or superior to the average in each category (which is $5)... there HAS to be something wrong.

After 1.5 second of digging a bit deeper, it appears you missed the following category:

H Quality and Refinement

Light commercial vehicle standard....in burma $1
What's that buzzing noise? $2
Rock Solid $8

So, if you want to make that GTO (exactly as defined) a rattling, falling-apart-after-1-year piece of crap, the cost will be $41... while a no compromise, rock solid GTO will run you $48.

In any case, unless you cut somewhere, you're over budget. ;)

I was a little concerned that I had made it too complicated for internet attention spans though participation is higher than expected. t-rex, snot/poo proofing would surely be around $1000 due to extensive use of materials (ever checked under the rear seat cushion?) and actually paying engineers to work with poo during the development phase :D

A: Small-mid wagon (think astra size) $4
B: 2.2 DI $4
C: 6M RWD $6
D: Unique but polarising $6
E: Ergonomically adequate $5
F: Same as rex, fast glass and single CD $2
G: Class leading dynamics for $7
H: Quality $5. Noisy but reliable :D

$39 :D

P.S. There was originally 10 sections for $50 (to cater for my pathological addiction to round numbers) but it was too long winded.
