Car Surfing Kills Teens
CDC report shows typical victims are males from Midwest, South.
-- Robert Preidt

THURSDAY, Oct. 16 (HealthDay News)—Parents need to talk to their teens about the dangers of car surfing, in which people ride on the outside of a moving vehicle, a new government report shows.

To come to this conclusion, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed articles about car surfing published in U.S. newspapers from January 1990 to August 2008.

There were 99 articles about car surfing incidents, including 58 that ended in fatalities. Injuries and deaths occurred at a wide range of vehicle speeds, ranging from 5 mph to 80 mph. The average age of those injured or killed was 17.6 years old, and males accounted for 70 percent of the victims.

^ Ghost riding is typically walking alongside your car.....completely stupid. Car surfing is as dangerous as it is completely stupid.

I say just let Darwin do his magic.
Bingo! Darwin Awards in effect. I can't feel any sympathy for people who die or get injured from doing stupid things like "car surfing."

I'm all for Darwin helping us evolve, but 30% is way too many chicks, it's a waste. We need to get these girls on the main stage and off of the cars.

Midwest and the South? Seems more like a West and East Coast kind of thing. When I think of car surfing, the image that comes to mind is gangstas from Inglewood and wealthy imitators from Malibu in their Caprices and Bimmers, respectively, rather than kids from Naperville.

/Los Angeles stereotyping.

The thing is, this kind of stupidity leaves cars in motion... possible the injured people weren't actually involved but say, walking down the sidewalk to get milk or whatever the hell pedestrians are doing

Young people experiment with new behaviors. Period. That's how they learn to walk, talk, and throw snowballs.

I'd say the CDC's trying to make a mountain out of this molehill is the real story. They take an 18 year period, and claim there were 99 articles written about this behavior. So that makes about five per year, or less than one every two months.

There were 58 reported deaths in 18 years, or about three per year. That's in a nation that now numbers 300 million plus 20+/- million uncounted illegals and assorted resident terrorists and drug lords. So three is .00000001% of 300 million. Did I get the decimal correct?

Those figures are statistically null. Of course, to the families and friends affected by the tragedy, there is no null. But...

More people probably choke from stuffing potato :nono: chips into their maws--remember our Great & Fearless Warrior's potato chip attack incident around 2001?--annually than croak from car surfing.

Granted, car surfing is dumb. Granted, I (and probably most folks here) have done things that were as dumb or dumber, and by the grace of God survived our adolescence and young adulthood.

So the CDC is looking for more money to suck up to address this statistically nonexistent problem.
Has the CDC studied the numerous once-eradicated diseases that are now spreading in the US courtesy of our unguarded borders?

And after a 10 year study, employing God-knows-how-many buddies and hangers-on, guess what their conclusion will be?

Some kids are reckless.

Do you think $50 million will be enough?

I did it once, before it was "Cool". I was not the driver and I was a little under the influence. 25 years later I still look back at it as one of my dumbest moves ever.

Wow finally an adult that remembers his childhood/teen years...

Seems like everyone want to point a finger at teens for everything they can! It's like my father that was yelling at me for spinning the tire (on a 130hp FWD car so not much spinning involved here!) and then I found out when he was a teen he bought tire just to blow them with friend in a friend's car (Challenger I think).

Stop acting like you never been young, you did and you did stupid **** like teen are doing now! And some of them are dying of it and some are getting paralysed, and still a majority get's out fine and grow up to be all kind of person: your average bum on the side of the street with no money up to lawyer, doctor, politician, etc!

The best was to go to the old gas stations, they always had a stack of tires that were worn in the back, go mount them on the rim then make the smokeshow until they go pop then put on more :lmao:
