Car and Driver Praises Chevy Equinox

Car and Driver did a road test of the new Chevy Equinox and were pretty impressed by it.

The article concludes that "The Equinox suggests a whole new attitude at Chevrolet."

I'm not much of a fan of SUVs, but I have to admit, this one looks very good. Especially considering how most of these vehicles are actually used.

They seem to have gotten underperforming engines in both the Tahoe and the crew cab pickup from a couple of months before. Their acceleration should have been considerably better.

They mention the Tahoe having a green engine, only 90 miles when they got a hold of it. I wish GM would break these things in a bit before they turn them over to be tested.

They Yukon XL tested a couple of years ago did zero to 60 in 8.2 seconds, quicker than the Tahoe they tested at the same time, but it had 15,000 miles on it.

The 5.3 may not take the Hemi and Nissan's 5.6, but it can certainly put on a better showing than these two tests.

Wow Car and Diver made a good comment about a GM car. They must not be feeling well. They are usually the first to bash a GM car.

Let's hope that Chevy gets the engine right. I don't mind the 3.4L (although I do wish it was the 3.5L from the Malibu) as much as I mind where it is coming from. I don't mind GM building cars in China to sell to Chinese people, but I don't like Chinese people building engines for cars/trucks that will be sold in the US.

All that said, I am excited about the Equinox. I hope it is a success and that Chevy sells everyone they can build.

I too was pleased that Car and Driver had some nice things to say about the Equinox. Especially since they lumped it in with the Caravan and Explorer. Those two vehicles have had tremendous success over the years.

I can't wait to test drive an Equinox.

Local dealer here in west Toronto has 2 Equinox LS's in stock now. One is a base and the other is has a few options. Both are FWD. Love to test one at some point though I won't be in the market for a few years. Maybe they will pop the 3.5L in by then!

The NOX will be a big hit, they are just beautiful trucks!

This is a preview, not a review. I've been reading C&D for years and they tend to be "gentle" on their previews or solo tests. Read their preview of the 2004 Grand Prix and then compare it to their full blown review of it. Quite different reads. Also, their comparos are where their real feelings really become apparent. When they compare and rank a vehicle, that's when you can tell if they really like it or not.

The Equinox has attractive looks inside and out, but why did GM have to put such and old and outdated motor in it? At least the 3500 would have cracked the 200 HP mark. Based upon what the Equinox brings to the table and the state of the competition, I predict a middling performance in the next comparison test. I hope I'm wrong.

The latest Consumer Reports is already marking the Equinox down, site unseen, because of this old motor. You can tell they won't rate it well already.

I am glad you mentioned this because now i dont have to type so much. Though I feel that they were abnormaly nice to the vehical in this short take, so I think they might like it just as much in the full test.

I wish someone knew how to find the ages of the engines used by the competitions vehicals, because they all cant be newer motors.

Yeah, they can be like that sometimes... But they were very detailed (smooth ride, Japenese lightswitch) with the Equinox, which makes me think that their review will be just as good..

We shalll wait and see :drevil:

I have heard that there have been some reliability problems with the 3400 in the recent past. Plus, with its modest output, it seems odd that they would choose such a motor. Perhaps they don't have the capacity to supply enough 3500's yet. I'm not really sure why they made this decision but I can see some negative reviews of the Equinox coming within its first few years of production. But only time will tell, I guess.

The Equinox is easy on the eyes. I can see this selling. This should help where the Aztek failed.

185 hp sounds a little wimpy for a vehicle that size. with looks that tough and class leading size you'd think chev'd have liked "the most powerful" bragging rights to go with it. ah well, pretty slick little package anywho. but where'd the cool shifter from pre-production models go? looked like the hummers... kinda trick.
