full details from Camaro5:
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3589

Some info:
How much does it weigh? - Unspecific answer, more than a '69.
Does it weigh under 4k lbs? - Yes.
How big is it? - Bigger than a '69 (this reference was common)
Any idea on engines? - Nothing solid, one variant does have a supercharger.
How many different models? - No definitive answer, but they have seen 3.
Was the Mustang used as a comparison? - The GT500 was used as a benchmark.
My driver Jason and carried a wonderful conversation all throughout the ride, he also managed to drop the hint that the camaro he had driven had SS badging on the interior BUT all the paperwork had Z28.
Too bad it looks like too much info leaked out from this one visit so there'll be no more tours.

First gens were about 3200lb. GM has been stupid with this car. Since the concept was introduced I've built a V8 Vega, rebuilt 2 motors and purchased 2 new cars. I'm so over the Camaro now that I think I'll just fix up my yellow '85 IROC and be done with it. I'm more interested in other GM product that is 'fresh.' Call me a hater if you wish but I still own IROC-Z.org and probably bleed GM more than most of you. I'm very disappointed.

Honestly, would you rather that no information was let out to the public? Nothing
at this point would seem to get you excited. Keep in mind this, I'd say the majority
of potential future owners are very much interested in advanced info.

We're looking for a second ponycar for my wife. If this drags on too much longer, I think I'm going to go crazy!

At this point, considering that the car will be out next year, and then plan on waiting 2 years for the high end models to appear and their teething problems & markups to disappear -- we're looking for a 3 year wait on top of this already excruciating one.

I think I'll just spring on a GT500 at this rate! You can get them in the mid 40's now. I would buy a Vette and just be done with it, but we have two kids, planning on three.

So that's why we want another pony car: So we can make family outings in them into a mini cruise :)

But then again -- I know that next year when the Camaro is unveiled and we see them prowling the streets a 3 year wait won't be SOOO bad. Of course, by then who knows where the Mustang will be.

At least we have choices now!

GT500 as a benchmark? Do they have some screws loose, or what?

The GT500 is the LAST car they should be benchmarking. That car is OUTRAGEOUSLY overweight and unbalanced, thanks to its iron-block engine, and is only track-capable because you can roughly predict where its sheer mass will be sliding around.

It produces TONS of power, but cannot harness it effectively, because its transmission is too crude, and its rear tires cannot transmit the power to the road.

The plain old Mustang GT is a superior car in many respects. Much lighter, almost perfectly balanced, and just as fun.

GM should be trying to replicate the stillborn 2007 SVT Cobra. 550hp SC aluminum engine right out of the GT, IRS, and aluminum parts galore. Ended up being too expensive to justify.

I think (and hope) that what they mean is that the GT500's power and performance #'s are being used as a benchmark, not its weight and balance.

You have some very valid points here. However, if they set the 2007 SVT Cobra in their sites, wouldn't the Camaro SS fall in the same trap - "end up being too expensive to justify"?

IMO the BMW 335i and Infinity G37 should be the benchmark for the mid-entry model (Z28?). Even if the target markets are a bit different, they are performance coupes in the same price range. I'm not talking give the Camaro all wheel drive and and turn it into a luxury coupe, but it isn't likely the Holden Coupe 60 will come here as a Pontiac to take on that responsibility and the CTS coupe will be priced way above those two. Keep the Camaro image, compete with Mustang and Challenger for the target market and give it the performance to blow away the yuppy coupes. Then have the top model (SS?) compete with the GT500 on the drag strip and perform like an M3. I may be asking for the world, but I'm a GM loyalist and I have high expectations of my beloved.

Besides with the resurrection of the CAMARO nameplate you better compete with the best performance coupes on the planet. Isn't that a true representation of the first gen model and its heritage? I feel if GM can't compete with the 335i and G37 right out of the gate at the same price point, they have missed the mark.

By the time the 3 years is up you'll be ready to get yourself a new ponycar. Buy your wife the GT500 or a new Dodge Challenger and start the clock on your next ride for the Camaro SS.

I don't care much for superchargers, or turbochargers for that matter, so I suppose I'll be looking at the mid level model of the Camaro (base V-8 car). Interesting information, but it isn't that groundbreaking.

the back seat of a mustang is like the back seat of a 3000GT, storage for a couple bags of food lol. if you want somthing that can be sporty and fun, and still haul a family, the G8 is where you should be looking.
