Camaro orders: Nearly 3,000 in three days

DALE JEWETT/AutoWeek
Thursday, October 16, 2008

Nearly 3,000 people stepped up for a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro during the first three days since General Motors opened up the order bank.

And those people will be waiting at least four months before they get a car, as production isn't scheduled to start until February. Those who have placed an order will get updates from GM, including notification of the target production week for their car.

GM will build the Camaro at its Oshawa, Ontario, assembly plant.

I can't blame people. 422hp for well under $35k is a great deal.

Considering what it is in relation to its previous incarnation it's a great deal. IRS, 300hp v6 BASE!, much much better quality than ever before, etc. and you can see why folks are ordering it. And the SS is a great deal, too.

I'm sure GM will sell their 100,000 the first year or two. It's the 3rd year that will tell the story. But I'm optimistic even there since the car will get great mileage when you realize 25 years ago you couldn't even get a Camaro with 300hp, let alone as the base model and let alone with the refinement this new one will exhibit.

I'd buy one if I could, but practical needs exclude it from consideration :(.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see that 4 cylinder turbo that's been rumored once it hits the third year.

Assuming gas prices go back up, and I don't think there's any reason to believe that they won't, that'd be a great way to revive sales.

Hmmm I wonder if that's alot. I'm glad it's coming and that people are ordering it already... I just wonder if 3000 pre-orders is alot or not. I wonder how many total they'll have before it's released.
You wonder if 3000 in the 1st 3 days is a lot? There are still 5 months left until they will be on dealer lots.

How many did you expect in the 1st 3 days that it was available to preorder?

Arghhh.

I don't know if 3000 is alot for 3 days or not... that's why I asked the question.

If the Challenger had 300 pre-orders in 3 days then I'll say yes.

If the Aveo had 10,000 pre-orders in 3 days then I'll say no.

3000 in 3 days doesn't mean there will be 1000 every day for the next 5 months either. I wasn't saying it wasn't impressive... I was asking if it was.

BTW, I'm one of the few people here that asks genuine and hopes for genuine answers... I think we all get too used to people being sarcastic to actually recognize when a real question is being asked.

Compared to the Challenger it's a bad start, the Challenger sold out all the 2008s(5000) in one day and they added another 1400 cars to try and satisfy demand.

My guess is if the economy was better and people knew where they'd be in 5 months there would be a greater number pre-ordering.

Ah thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering. If the Challenger could manage 5000 orders in one day then 3000 in three days isn't anything astonishing. It's good, but not record-setting.

Considering that state of the economy 3000 is very good. Now the real question is will the Camaro survive the economy problems in the long run. It's all a case of timing IMO. Hopefully 9 months from now the US economy is in better shape.
