I bought a 96 s10 with an R title last year and the check engine light has been on since I got it.

I wasnt really concerned about it at the time, I have been planning on rebuliding all with a lift, and beefyin up the engine some.

But for a while not it has been acting like it doesn't have the guts that a vortex 4.3L should have. I have driven many of them and this one just seems not all there.

I did the basics to it: tranny fluid, oil, diffs, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and brakes...
It feels almost as if something is physically holding it back. I had a diagnostic ran on it and the code they gave me was p0340...camshaft position sensor...

Does anyone know what would cause that sensor to go bad?

And also when I have the truck off the ground and I spin the front wheels they dont feel as if they are spinning as freely as they should...I cant even spin them one whole rotation by placing the palm of my hand on the tread and giving it a good push...should they that tight???

that guy, my name is scooter and im a chevrolet tech,as far as your p0340 ther sensor is in the distributor and its primary purpose is for sequential fuel injection with secondary function of misfire diagnosis. These sensors do not go bad often but with any electrical part theres always a possibility,Ive been with chevy dealers for 18 years and have only seen a handful go bad.As far as your front wheels being tight, the first thing is if its 4x4 unplug the vacuum switch on the drivers side of the transfer case and see if the front driveshaft stops spinning. If it does and the wheels spin freely then change the vacuum switch. Its a 7/8 inch fitting with 3 plastic hose connections.be careful to plug it in correctly as it has a single plastic nub for proper orientation. hope this helps

thank you for the info...
I was reading a few other links on here and started looking around on my truck and noticed that it appears as if my coil has been arcing...I don't know for sure if it still is or if it just appears that way because it is old...

I am going to look into replacing it tomorrow...and how do I go about replacing the sensor or do I have to replace the whole distributor?

Well I priced a new distributor and I am going to get one and replace it.

I have been jumping around on here reading a few different things...I read about Sea Foam does anyone out there have any experiences with this stuff...a buddy of mine that I work with is ASE certified and he swears by it...
on all the forums and blogs that I have read about it I have yet to find anything negative about it...

I am also going to break down and finnaly buy a new EGR valve...a lot of the symptoms have been pointing to that...I took it off and it was pretty dirty...I cleaned pretty good with carb cleaner but that was like 2 months ago...

I am also looking into replacing the whole exhaust system...the existing one (or whats left of it) is all rotted out...half of it already fell off...
does anyone out there know whether there is a good or bad system to go with...it's just the 4.3L V6 nothing to special...everything on it is stock...

and yeah I am going to check out the vacumm switch idea, but I am going on vacation and wont be around my truck for a few weeks so it'll have to wait...
